Lucasfilm Decides Not To Re-Release ‘Star Wars’ Prequels In 3D; Will Focus On Rebooting Franchise

Before all of this madness with Disney purchasing Lucasfilm and announcing brand new Star Wars movies began, we were in the midst of getting George Lucas‘s prequel trilogy re-released into theaters with a 3D makeover.

The Phantom Menace had already returned to theaters last February to show off its third dimension, adding $43 million domestically and $59 million overseas to its overall box office take, and release dates were set for Attack of the Clones (September 20, 2013) and Revenge of the Sith (October 11, 2013).

Now those dates have been vacated.

According to reports, Lucasfilm has decided not to move forward with the 3D release of the other two prequels, and instead will turn their focus to the rebooting the Star Wars franchise with these new movies.

While they say the focus has shifted to “rebooting the franchise,” don’t expect the full reboot treatment. It’s assumed that they meant only that the movie franchise, which has been sleeping since Revenge of the Sith in 2005, is getting a jump start with the next trilogy.

As long as they still release them on 3D Blu-rays I don’t care if they go to theater.
