Remember that shortlist of actresses that was vying for the role of the female lead in Captain America: The Winter Soldier? Well, it’s probably best if you crumple that shortlist up into a ball and throw it away, because Emily VanCamp (ABC’s Revenge) is the latest actress to be in talks to join the cast of the sequel, Deadline reports.
VanCamp will reportedly take the role of Sharon Carter, Peggy Carter’s niece in the comics. The report stopped short of confirming the actual role itself, but odds are it will most likely be that of Sharon.
According to her Marvel profile page, Sharon Carter would join S.H.I.E.L.D. inspired by her aunt’s adventures as a high-ranking soldier in World War II. After successfully becoming a high ranking S.H.I.E.L.D agent herself, it would be Captain America who would save her from a vicious attack by a mercenary known as Batroc the Leaper. The two would not fall in love at first, but over time their paths would cross again and again. Ultimately they would have that romantic relationship that Steve could never have with Peggy. Eventually Sharon would bring Steve to meet an elderly Peggy, who would then come join S.H.I.E.L.D.
Now seeing that Hayley Atwell, who played Peggy Carter in the first Captain America film, has said she won’t be coming back, it’s highly unlikely that we will ever see the two characters reunite.
VanCamp has appeared in several smaller film roles throughout her career, but has made a name for herself on the small screen by starring in the hit ABC show Revenge, as well as Brothers and Sisters and WB’s Everwood.
Should VanCamp get the role, she would star opposite Chris Evans as Captain America. Also starring in the sequel are Sebastian Stan, Anthony Mackie, Frank Grillo, Toby Jones, Scarlett Johansson, and Samuel L. Jackson.
Directed by Anthony and Joe Russo, Captain America: The Winter Soldier is scheduled to hit theaters on April 4, 2014.
