Tony Stark Gets His Metal Tested In This Extended ‘Iron Man 3’ Super Bowl Trailer

BAADASSSSS!   |

Iron Man 3 Trailer Header

Disney and Marvel Studios premiered a 30-second TV spot for their next huge superhero epic Iron Man 3 during tonight’s Super Bowl. Now an extended version has made its way onto the Internet.

You can watch it here below.

After franchise star Robert Downey Jr. engages us in the greatest staring contest in the recorded history of mankind (he wins), we are treated to a solid minute of footage from the movie. It all comes in lighting quick glimpses, but eagle-eyed viewers will catch Ben Kingsley as the main heavy the Mandarin, Guy Pearce as Dr. Aldrich Killian, Don Cheadle suited up as a more patriotic War Machine, and a smashing finale where ol’ Shellhead has to make a mid-air rescue of thirteen people who have just been sucked out of an exploding aircraft when he can only carry four at a time. As Tony Stark would say, “Oh boy.”

The tone of the footage is somber at the start, but don’t bet on Tony Stark and his armored alter ego to get dragged kicking and screaming into brooding melancholy. Iron Man has been the series that built the Marvel movie empire into the box office juggernaut it is now, and without it we would never have been fortunate to pack into theaters last summer to see a holy damn Avengers movie written and directed by Joss Whedon. The events of The Avengers have definitely impacted the other ongoing franchises in Marvel’s celluloid universe; Iron Man 3 is the first movie to hit screens since the super-team extravaganza became the highest-grossing film of 2012. Hiring Shane Black, whose direction of Downey in the classic 2005 crime comedy Kiss Kiss Bang Bang helped set the troubled actor on the path to the career redemption of a lifetime, was a brilliant move on both Marvel and Disney’s part.

After the entertaining but creatively underwhelming Iron Man 2 it looks like the series has found its legs again, and in all likelihood Iron Man 3 could even be better than the original. That would be quite an achievement since the original is one of the best comic book superhero movies ever made.

Iron Man 3 opens in 2D and 3D on May 3, 2013.
