SXSW Film Festival Announces 2013 Midnight Features and Shorts

S-V/H/S as part of SXSW Midnighters

The Midnight Features and Shorts Programs for this year’s South by Southwest Film Festival have just been announced! For 20 years, the SXSW Midnighters section has embraced genre filmmaking from veterans and rookies alike, and this year continues that glorious tradition. Including four World Premieres, three U.S. Premieres, the nine films picked to guide SXSW audiences into the darkness offer an assortment of filmmaking styles and span the gamut of of genre storytelling.

This will be my third year attending the South by Southwest Film Festival and this year’s lineup of Midnight Features looks fantastic. In previous years, the lineup has included movies like Attack the Block, Kill List, The Innkeepers, Iron Sky, John Dies at the End, and V/H/S – and I can’t wait to stand in line for two hours (hopefully not in the rain this year!) and enjoy these late night genre flicks! Here are some of the Midnight Features I’m most excited about:

S-V/H/S/

Directors/Screenwriters: Simon Barrett, Jason Eisener (Hobo with a Shotgun), Gregg Hale, Eduardo Sánchez (Lovely Molly), Adam Wingard, Gareth Huw Evans (The Raid: Redemption), Timo Tjahjanto

Searching for a missing student, two private investigators break into his abandoned house and find another collection of mysterious VHS tapes. In viewing the horrific contents of each cassette, they realize there may be terrifying motives behind the student’s disappearance.

Cast: Adam Wingard, Lawrence Levine, L. C. Holt, Kelsy Abbott, Hannah Hughes

The Lords of Salem (U.S. Premiere)

Director/Screenwriter: Rob Zombie

From the singular mind of horror maestro Rob Zombie comes a chilling plunge into a nightmare world where evil runs in the blood.

Cast: Sheri Moon Zombie, Bruce Davison, Jeff Daniel Phillips, Ken Foree, Patricia Quinn

Plus One (World Premiere)

Director: Dennis Iliadis, Screenwriter: Bill Gullo

When the party of the decade is disrupted by a supernatural phenomenon, the night soon descends in to chaos.

Cast: Rhys Wakefield, Logan Miller, Ashley Hinshaw, Natalie Hall

The Rambler

Director/Screenwriter: Calvin Lee Reeder

After being released from prison, a man known as The Rambler stumbles upon a strange mystery as he attempts a dangerous journey through treacherous back roads and small towns en route to reconnecting with his long lost brother.

Cast: Dermot Mulroney, Lindsay Pulsipher, Natasha Lyonne, James Cady, Scott Sharot

Haunter (Canada) (World Premiere)

Director: Vincenzo Natali, Screenwriter: Brian King

Lisa Johnson is one day shy of her 16th birthday and will be forever. She and her family are doomed to repeat the fateful day before they were all killed in 1985.

Cast: Abigail Breslin, Stephen McHattie, Peter Outerbridge, Michelle Nolden, David Hewlett

You’re Next

Director: Adam Wingard, Screenwriter: Simon Barrett

A fresh twist on home-invasion horror. A gang of masked murderers descend upon a family reunion, and the victims seem trapped…until an unlikely guest proves to be the most talented killer of all.

Cast: Sharni Vinson, Nicholas Tucci, Wendy Glenn, AJ Bowen, Joe Swanberg
