Exclusive Banner: Dark Horse Comics: The Victories

With one mini-series in the bag, as well as a run in Dark Horse Presents, Michael Avon Oeming‘s The Victories has already established itself as a fun new superhero series with a unique take on the genre and more of Oeming’s singular art.

Today, Geeks of Doom learned that The Victories is set to return this May as an ongoing series from Dark Horse Comics.

I spoke with Oeming about the series and got a first look at the cover and a preview page from the first issue, which you can check out below after the jump.

Michael Avon OemingHenchman21: What can you tell our readers about what is coming up in the second miniseries?

Michael Avon Oeming: In the first series, we gave hints to Metatron having a mysterious adventure on the Moon. We’ll get into that and how it affects him and the rest of the team. We meet the Advisors, a shadowy group of powerful men and women who see Champions (or super powers) as the key to controlling the world, but not in your Lex Luther kind of way. They want to control the world by transcending it. The 3-part DHP story featuring the Jackal sets up a lot of these events and he’ll play a major part in this next arc as well.

H21: The first series largely focused on the character of Faustus and his background. Will we be seeing the background of the rest of team this time around?

MO: Not only will we learn more about D.D. Mau and Metatron, we’ll also see the return of several side characters we introduced in the first series, which will eventually include other kids molested by the Mark, and the Sai’s brother Strike who goes through a physical and spiritual transformation.

H21: How does the second mini-series differ from the first?

MO: The first series was specifically about Faustus and his child molesting master, the Mark. Now we’ll get to see more of the rest of the team. In this first arc, we’ll focus on D.D. Mau and Metatron. Instead of giving everyone a moment in each story, I’m choosing to focus on exploring a few characters at a time.

H21: Now that the series is ongoing, do you find the story going in a way you didn’t think it would?

MO: Well, I’m not making it easy on myself, as I’ve been writing in a very lose “Marvel style” for myself. That means the scripts are the last thing to be done and the thing I struggle with the most. My editors, Scott Allie, Daniel Chabon, and Shantel LaRocque really have to wait until all the parts come together at the end to see what the story actually is, and they do a great job refocusing me if I stray. I let it be very organic, so things will happen on the page in a different direction than I had in the outline. There are things that happen as a complete surprise to me, so I’m hoping the reader will enjoy it just as much. Breaking certain superhero conventions isn’t going to be for everyone, but I’m hoping it’s a ride people are going to want to come along with.

H21: Can you tell me where the idea for The Victories came from?

MO: Early on, it was an outreach of my therapy sessions. I was dealing with some deep anxiety and some depression. Going to therapy was a great help, but as I went and learned more about myself, I kept stumbling over new motivations for heroes and stories. Therapy became art therapy and that gave birth to the first arc which focused mainly on Faustus and his struggles with addiction and child abuse, which I tied into his origin.

For the ongoing series I’ll continue that with other characters from the Victories, but also extrapolate those anxieties into a larger world. I see American society as a neurotic, anxiety filled country and a lot of that plays out in the wide beliefs in conspiracy theories which plague and rule many people’s lives. We have these horrible things in Americas past like Vietnam, a war that tore us apart, the Cold War that inbred an already deep sense of isolated and paranoia, school shootings and 9-11 all contribute to centuries of psychic damage inflicted (self-inflicted or otherwise) on America. Our country is like a damaged person trying to deal with all the shit it’s been through. I want to show how societies psyche can mirror that of people. Throw super heroes into the mix and I think we have an endless possibility for stories. But really, it’s about the characters in the Victories, but that’s the world I want to have those stories take place in.

H21: Is it tough to find time to work on Victories while still trying to get Powers out as well?

MO: Not at all. Working on creator owned work is easy going and fulfilling for me on every level. I’m lucky to be not only fast enough, but in love enough with what I’m doing to do two books at once. On Victories, it actually takes me longer to write it than to draw it.

If you want to catch up on The Victories, you can get your hands on the first five-issue mini-series in the collected trade paperback or single issues, as well as issues 20, 21, and 22 of Dark Horse Presents now.
