Screenwriter Lawrence Kasdan Wants New ‘Star Wars’ Films To Start Fresh

On Friday, Star Wars screenwriters Lawrence Kasdan and Simon Kinberg briefly talked about Episode VII, the standalone films, and what it was like as a fan to write a script for the new Star Wars legacy. However, they didn’t address what Episode VII could contain or if it would be an extension of the Episodes that came before them. The Los Angeles Times, however, managed to get some answers in regards to those questions during Final Draft Hall of Fame ceremony.

During the interview, Kasdan stated that he wasn’t focusing on the reported standalone films nor was he focusing on creating an extension of the previous films. Instead he said:

“I’m trying to start fresh. There are certain pleasures that we think the saga can bring to people that they’ve been missing, and we’re hoping to bring them that, and at the same time, have them feel that it’s all new.”

Exactly what have we been missing? Certainly there is more to this than Kasdan is letting on because everything about the Star Wars films seemed to be wrapped up. The screenwriter did said the following:

“The first three, ‘Star Wars,’ ‘Empire’ and ‘Return of the Jedi’ are all sort of more about people than the ones that followed.”

The tones of the two trilogies are vastly different from each other, so Kasdan could be referring to the fact that this new trilogy could see a return to being about the people, and not just one person.

Head over to the LA Times for the full interview.
