The First Image From Eli Roth’s ‘The Green Inferno’ Has Got Red On It

BAADASSSSS!   |

Eli Roth

Despite not having directed a feature film since 2007’s Hostel Part II – which I actually loved a great deal more than the original – was released to mediocre reviews and box office in the midst of a crowded summer movie line-up, Eli Roth has never been bereft of projects as producer and screenwriter to keep him busy. He’s currently at work on his first directorial gig in five years titled The Green Inferno which he co-wrote with Guillermo Amoedo. The horror thriller is a modern day take on the ultra-violent cannibal gore fests vomited forth from the Italian film industry throughout the 70s and 80s, in particular Ruggero Deodato’s grimy 1980 classic Cannibal Holocaust (the title of Roth’s movie is an reference to a film-within-a-film in Holocaust).

The movie’s production company Worldwide Entertainment has released the first still from The Green Inferno as well as the film’s plot synopsis. You can check them both out here below.

Here is the official plot synopsis:

A group of student activists from New York City travel to the Amazon to protect a dying tribe, but crash in the jungle and are taken hostage by the very natives they saved.

The Green Inferno recently wrapped production in Chile and Peru. Looking at the cast of mostly unknowns, the only name I recognized was Daryl Sabara, who got his start in movies as one of the young stars of Robert Rodriguez’s Spy Kids franchise and went on to appear in Rob Zombie’s Halloween remake, Rodriguez’s “Mexsploitation” action flick Machete, and last year played famed pulp author Edgar Rice Burroughs as a young man in the big-budget sci-fi adventure John Carter.

The movie has no release date or distributor yet, but Roth’s name alone should guarantee it a stateside release from a company like Film District or Lionsgate. I wouldn’t be surprise to see The Green Inferno get a lot of play on the film festival circuit this year. While it’s good to see Roth back behind the camera on a project that sounds really interesting for anyone who has devoured a lot of those flesh-eating grindhouse gems from back in the day, I still wait for the day when we get that long-promised Thanksgiving movie.
