It has been widely speculated that the Rocket Raccoon – a role that has yet to be cast – character in James Gunn‘s Guardians of the Galaxy would be done by the respective actor in a motion-capture suit. Seems to make sense for the obvious reasons, unless there is am actual Raccoon who can walk on two legs and has a cockney accent – assuming that is even the accent they want to go with. But HitFix (via CinemaBlend) has discovered that Rocket Raccoon won’t be done in mo-cap, but instead the character will be a blend of CGI, “rotomation,” and traditional animation.
This is welcoming news for those who have grown tired of seeing motion-capture techology used. Motion capture, or mo-cap, is known as the process of using technology to capture the movements of an actor.
By forgoing the mo-cap technology, Marvel is definitely pushing the envelope with Guardians of the Galaxy, so it should be interesting to see how they approach some of other characters’ appearances.
In the interview, Victoria Alonso, Marvel’s EVP of Visual Effects, said the following:
“You can’t do any motion capture with a raccoon – they won’t let you put the suit on,” laughed Alonso. “But we will do rotomation, probably, for some of the behavior. Rocket will have his own personality, of course, and clearly we can’t do mocap on a tree, per say, but we definitely will have performers to emulate what James Gunn will lead to be the behavior and the performance. He’s very clear on where he wants to take the characters.”
Assuming that the tree Alonso is speaking about is Groot, what does that mean for how that character is presented? Will they use the same animation mediums used on Rocket Raccoon for Groot, or will they do something else? It definitely seems interesting. We don’t even really know how the whole film will be presented to us, but based on this interview, it sounds like it will be really great to watch.
Recently Chris Prattsigned on to play Star-Lord. Guardians of the Galaxy is scheduled to hit theaters on August 1, 2014.
