Academy Award-winning actor Chris Cooper (American Beauty, Adaptation) has signed on to play the nefarious Norman Osborn in Marc Webb‘s The Amazing Spider-Man 2, according to THR.

A pivotal character in the Spider-Man universe, Norman Osborn is president of Oscorp Industries and the alter-ego of Green Goblin. In Webb’s The Amazing Spider-Man, Norman Osborn is briefly mentioned by Oscorp executive Ratha (Irrfan Khan) as “terminally ill” – which is why Dr. Curt Connors (Rhys Ifans) has been experimenting with combining human and animal DNA – to create a cure.

Of course the serum Connors creates is ultimately his undoing, and the cross-species genetic experiments directly result in Peter Parker (Andrew Garfield) becoming Spider-Man and Connors becoming the Lizard. It’s safe to assume that Rhino (Paul Giamatti) and Electro (Jamie Foxx) will obtain their super-powers in a similar manner in Webb’s upcoming sequel.

But if Osborn is terminally ill, will we see him as the Green Goblin in ASM2? I doubt it. Webb is creating a larger Spider-Man universe, strategically introducing characters that will have larger roles in later films. I’m willing to bet that, while on his death bed, Osborn will inject himself with Oscorp’s latest attempt at the cure and transform into the grotesque, green-skinned Goblin.

The real question is… who’s still working on this serum at Oscorp? We haven’t heard any casting news involving Ifans or Khan reprising their roles – so there must be some new scientist working under Osborn. My bet: Colm Feore as Dr. Michael Morbius. A Nobel Prize-winning biochemist, Morbius attempted to cure himself of a rare blood disease with an experimental treatment involving vampire bats and electroshock therapy. Experiments, you say? Vampire bats, you say? Sounds like some cross-species genetic shenanagins going on!

If Feore is Morbius, it would then make sense that Felicity Jones is playing Felicia Hardy. Fans of Spider-Man: The Animated Series will remember that Morbius had a romance with Hardy, who would go on to become Black Cat. That’s my guess, anyway. Regardless, Cooper is a fantastic choice for Osborn – and I’m looking forward to The Amazing Spider-Man 3 and a final showdown between Spider-Man and Goblin that could very well follow the Death of Gwen Stacy story arc.
