Just recently we heard that Tim Curry was joining the cast of Cartoon Network’s animated series Star Wars: The Clone Wars. But alas, things often change…and change quickly.

Lucasfilm has announced that their acquisition by Disney and the focus on the new trilogy of movies starting with Star Wars Episode VII has led them to the decision that they will no longer be producing new episodes of The Clone Wars for Cartoon Network. They are, however, working on a brand new animated series that will be set in uncharted waters.

Continue on below now for more and to see a video with Clone Wars supervising director Dave Filoni talking about the decision and what’s next.

Not much is known about the new animated series—not even what network we might see it on—only that it will be set in a time period that has not been touched on in movies or TV series before.

Although The Clone Wars is ending after five seasons, fans have not seen the end of the series yet. As mentioned in the video below, some loose ends are still out there to be tied up, and will be. It has not yet been announced where fans will be able to watch this bonus content, but it’s safe to assume that it will be online or on a DVD/Blu-ray release…either individually or as a special feature on the final season/full series release. It will all depend on how much extra story they have to tell to wrap it all up sufficiently.

This news also brings with it bad news for those excited about Robot Chicken creators Seth Green and Matthew Senreich’s animated comedy series Star Wars Detours (watch the trailer here if you’re unfamiliar with it). That project hasn’t been outright canceled, but it has been delayed. The thinking here being that with the new trilogy in the spotlight now, it’s not the best time for a comedy series to be released.

This is one of what could be a few big changes now that Disney owns Lucasfilm and new movies are being made. With such a massive change in direction for a company, both good news and hard-to-swallow news will often be part of the package.

Stay tuned for some news on how this also may be affecting some highly anticipated new Star Wars video games as well.
