Twenty years ago a little movie called Jurassic Park roared its way into theaters, cinematic history, and of course, your electrified eyes. Maybe you’ve heard of it. Today that same movie finds its way back into theaters, this time with an added third dimension.

The original Jurassic Park did something you might not have realized: it introduced we the uneducated to the vicious creatures that were velociraptors. Growing up, most of us had our own dinosaur kick and knew the all-stars—tyrannosaurus rex, triceratops, brontosaurus, and so on—but it was JP that made us all aware of raptors and put the animal up there with the big boys.

Now comes word that Jurassic Park IV, which is currently scheduled to hit theaters next June, will attempt to recreate that magic with the introduction of a new dinosaur.

Paleontologist Jack Horner was a dinosaur adviser on the original movie, and will be a consultant on the new movie as well. He let it slip that a new dinosaur will be making its big screen debut, but couldn’t share any more than that:

“I can’t actually tell you who that will be, but you’ll want to keep the lights on after you see this movie.”

This isn’t the first time since the original movie that a new dinosaur has been featured. The 2001 sequel Jurassic Park III introduced the terrifying spinosaurus, “The Spine Lizard,” which is considered to be one of the largest carnivores ever to walk the earth. But unlike the raptors in the original movie, spinosaurus didn’t skyrocket to dino-fame, even with its massive size and the fact that it took out a t-rex in the movie.

There was also concept art that showed off some kind of humanoid dinosaur that was being kicked around once upon a time for the next Jurassic Park (back before JP4 was made official). Let us all hope they didn’t revert back to those plans.

Will the new dinosaur be another giant? Or will they go with one of the craftier smaller species like a velociraptor? Better yet, which dinosaur do YOU want to see wreak some havoc?

Jurassic Park IV will be directed by Colin Trevorrow, and will be released on June 13, 2014.

  1. I wouldn´t be so sure about Spinosaurus not becoming famous after Jurassic Park III. Before the film it was one of the forgotten dinos- now it has starred in a couple documentaries (although one was very bad), was the inspiration behind the big bad dino in both Terra Nova and Ice Age 3 (ok, the latter was a Baryonyx, but a kind of spinosaur all the same, and there’s no question that the concept of the “bigger spinosaur” as the T-Rex’s nemesis is now quite deeply seated thanks to JPIII), also starred in a Primeval episode, and in several cartoons and videogames…

That it isn´t as beloved as the raptors is another thing- killing T-Rex didn´t help. But it is certainly one of the dino celebrities now…
