Record Store Day Mike Watt

Today, April 20, marks Record Store Day 2013, where special vinyl releases will be available exclusively through brick and mortar independent record stores. Many artists are involved in the promotion and celebration of the day, including Mike Watt, bassist for some amazing bands over the years like The Minutemen, Firehose, and currently Iggy and The Stooges. (There’s even a special vinyl-sized Mike Watt Tote Bag available that you can fill up with all your records.)

Recently, Geeks of Doom’s Stoogeypedia had a chance to have a lengthy video Skype conversation with Watt about a plethora of topics, including his participation in Record Store Day — Watt will be performing today with The Secondmen at Fingerprints Record Store in Long Beach, CA. So, in honor of today’s celebration of vinyl, we asked Watt to reveal his Top 6 Favorite Records Of All Time (we asked for five, but apparently, he’s got six). Check out an excerpt from our conversation here below.

In a post-9/11 world, things are often viewed with a corrupted perspective, forced upon the populace by a fear-mongering media driven by corporate interests and partisan biases. Since that moment in history, we’ve seen a lot of television shows and movies released taking the patriotic side of the government, a world in which the show 24 echoes sentiments parodied in the morning by Team America: World Police. But in 2010, a series with a different perspective on world events postulated a refreshing, and perhaps frightening yet accurate, view”¦ enter Rubicon.

Rubicon is an espionage drama. Aired in 2010, it focuses on connections and conspiracies. No more are the days of The X-Files and how "the truth is out there" about bogative government controlled plots and agendas; with Rubicon we have a startling drama that zeros in on menaces and conspiracies of a more realistic nature – those driven by the greed and profits of corporations.

Launch Date: October 2, 2012

Price: $6.99 Monthly Membership

They say it takes a month to really get to know someone (okay, no one really says that, I just needed to set up this review, okay?). After a month, with any luck, all the quirks and vices that drive us to love or hate someone have began to bubble to the surface. It’s from there that we decide whether to keep the relationship going or not.

Streaming anime network Neon Alley and I have been courting for the past month, and I have got to tell you: things are looking good.

Neon Alley works like no other streaming anime service out right now. Unlike Crunchyroll or Hulu, Neon Alley runs exactly like any cable network with a full slot of programmed shows airing with episode one. It’s a novel idea that harkens back to the days of Cartoon Network’s Toonami.

Okay, a television network that plays all anime, not that special, right? Wrong, dead wrong [says while pointing an accusatory finger].

Two New Trailers For ‘Drive’ Director Nicolas Winding Refn and Star Ryan Gosling’s ‘Only God Forgives’
space
The Movie God   |  @   |

Only God Forgives Image

One of the most intriguing and impressive talents working today, Danish director Nicolas Winding Refn consistently presents movies to our eyes that—whether you ultimately decide to love or hate them—will burrow their way deep into your skull and fuse themselves to your brain. To put it simply, once you’ve watched a Winding Refn film, it’s nearly impossible to get it out of your head.

The director’s previous works include the original Pusher trilogy, Bronson, and Valhalla Rising. But perhaps his best known movie is Drive, which starred Ryan Gosling as a stunt/getaway driver and went on to receive high critical praise.

Now the director and actor have re-teamed for a new movie titled Only God Forgives, and, if these two new international trailers are any indication, it will be just as dark and violent and visually stunning as we’ve come to expect from Winding Refn. You can check out the two (semi-NSFW) trailers below.
