Evan Peters To Play Quicksilver In ‘X-Men: Days Of Future Past’; What Does This Mean For ‘The Avengers 2’?

Evan Peters As Quicksilver

When Joss Whedon announced that Quicksilver and Scarlett Witch were to appear in The Avengers 2, it posed an interesting and legally pondering question. Could one character appear in two different franchises run by two different studios? In comic book lore, Magneto is the father of mutant twins, Quicksilver and the Scarlett Witch. Since the two are both mutants, they technically are a part of the X-Men property, which is also under the 20th Century Fox banner. However, the two are also members of the Avengers, which happens to be under the Marvel/Disney banner.

Now with Bryan Singer well into shooting X-Men: Days Of Future Past, he has made a stunning casting announcement. The director recently tweeted that Evan Peters will play Quicksilver, the mutant who is capable of running at superhuman speeds.

Here is the tweet confirming the news:

Again this development is a very interesting one. Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige confirmed that Quicksilver was in Whedon’s script, which means that the speedy mutant will indeed be a part of the Marvel cinematic universe. But the future of the speedy character is now in the air since Singer made the announcement. Are there going to be two Quicksilvers or will be huge legal battle to see which Quicksilver ends up in one of the films?

Well, there isn’t going to be a huge legal battle so as long as the respective films does one thing. Since Quicksilver and Scarlett Witch are both mutants and Avengers, the characters both belong to their respective studios, which means the Quicksilver of DOFP cannot speak about his allegiance with The Avengers, and the Quicksilver of The Avengers 2 cannot speak about his father or his ties to the X-Men universe.

Sounds simple enough. We’ll just have to see how Disney and Whedon reacts to this casting. They could stay the course and keep on going with what they have planned, or they could scrap it and move forward with something else. As stated in a previous report, Whedon’s version of the character will have to offer a different explanation of their superhuman upbringing.

It should be interesting to see how this all plays out. But what I think everyone wants to see is a giant crossover of the two franchises.
