The Anatomy Of TypeThe Anatomy Of Type
A Graphic Guide To 100 Typefaces
Hardcover | Kindle Edition
Written by Stephen Coles
Harper Design
Release Date: November 13, 2012
Cover Price: $25.99

I love minutia. It’s a fact, I’ll never deny it. Digging into the history of not just what we write but also how we write really intrigues me. So much so that this isn’t my first review of a book that deals with this subject matter. But whereas my first review was really more of a historic journey through the changes that fonts have undergone, this one is a visual guide that truly explains the differences and presents examples of why and how that particular typeface should be used. The Anatomy Of Type: A Graphic Guide To 100 Typefaces is definitely a handy, not-so-little book to have around.

Most people take them for granted. They neither know nor care how this font or that font came into being. Well, this book isn’t for them. It’s for me…well, me and people like me (I know it’s frightening to believe there are others similar to myself, but there are…we are legion). Yep, it’s for every introvert and bibliophile who loves books for more than the words on the page. Of course, it might be for you, too. That’s really up to you, isn’t it? Not sure if it’s right for you? Then allow me a moment to convince you.

How To Fake A Moon LandingHow To Fake A Moon Landing
Exposing the Myths of Science Denial
Hardcover | Kindle Edition
Written by Darryl Cunningham
Introduction by Andrew C. Revkin
Abrams ComicArts
Release Date: April 2, 2013
Cover Price: $16.95

The truth is out there. Nothing embodies that saying like the data presented in  How To Fake A Moon Landing: Exposing the Myths of Science Denial. No matter how you slice it, science is real and it has led mankind on some wondrous adventures and completely changed our lives. From how we view the cosmos to explaining things a bit closer to home here on Earth, we see science everywhere. Now before you go getting your panties in a bunch, this book doesn’t go out of it’s way to debunk anything you learned in Sunday School. Instead, it examines how, through scientific methods, deductions (and yes, proof) can be found in a plethora of areas.

From ridiculous conspiracy theories such as Global Warming lies and the Moon Landing hoax to more mundane, medicinally focused issues such as Homeopathic remedies and Chiropractic cures, Darryl Cunningham delves deeply into the facts. Knowing that both sides in an argument are apt to use disinformation to further their agendas, he presents everything in a humorous and enlightening manner.

Release Date: June 19, 2013

I can recall many moons ago (I won’t tell you how many because it would make me feel old), obsessive over my favorite comic book superheroes, pondering about what it would be like if someone was able to take these elements of the fantastic heroes and place them into a realistic, and believable context.

While we’ve seen Christopher Nolan bring a realistic grit to the Batman concept in film, and the Mark Millar/John Romita Jr. team brings a realism context in the shape of Kick-Ass, we’ve not yet (really) come across a “real” superhero with a “real” cause. And by that cause, I’m referring to something other than supervillain crimefighting.

Enter Liberator: a new series funded by Kickstarter, and released by Black Mask comics that takes the concept of a realistic hero (no costumes, just ski masks and dark apparel), and places them against a real cause they believe worth fighting for.

Out Of This World

Picture Puzzles to Search and Solve
Hardcover
Written by Walter Wick
Scholastic/Cartwheel Books
Release Date: April 1, 2013
Cover Price: $13.99

And now a little something for the younger reader. And I do mean younger. Every child loves to play hide and seek, right? Well this is hide and seek in book form. Like most look and find styled books, Can You See What I See: Out Of This World is chock full of hidden items and it’s up to us to discover where these random items are located.

The back of the book says it’s for “All Ages” but I’m pretty sure they meant it for the three to seven demographic…with a little help from any siblings, parents, etc. that might be around to throw in an assist. With well known photographer Walter Wick leading the way, children will have a blast searching for the people and items that are hidden in plain sight throughout the pages of this entertaining book.

Music Break: Listen To The Entire ‘Pacific Rim’ Soundtrack; Hear The Canceled Apocalypse

Sergio Grisanti's Pacific Rim Fanfix poster

The coming of Pacific Rim‘s release is almost upon us. By ‘us’ I mean thousands of nerds chomping at the bit to see Guillermo del Toro‘s latest opus: Giant robot exo-suits bashing the living hell of giant extra-dimensional sea monsters invading the Earth. But something is missing.

“What kind of music goes with titanic human-powered robots fighting kaiju invaders from the briney deep?” you ask.

Well, I’ll tell you. This year’s blockbuster film soundtrack is powered by Ramin Djawadi. Some of his previous works include the first Iron Man and Clash of the Titans movies. Keen listeners will also know Djawadi from a little HBO series called Game of Thrones. If you haven’t listened to any of the Thrones scores yet, I suggest you get on that post haste. Right after Pacific Rim has a go at your ear holes, of course.

Now take a break from Pacific Rim‘s intense visual campaign and have a listen to all of its soundtrack goodness below the cut. Hold on a sec. As an extra bonus I’ve dropped a look at a poster from IMAX’s new Fanfix poster series. The poster was created by artist Sergio Grisanti. You can experience both below.
