Matt Smith Leaving Doctor Who – But Who Will Be The Next Doctor?

Whovian heads exploded left and right over the weekend with the announcement from the BBC and Matt Smith that the current Time Lord will be departing from the popular and long-lived series. Doctor Who, it seems, will be getting another new Doctor, this time during the year of the show’s 50th Anniversary.

The announcement was made a few weeks following the season finale of Series 7, The Name Of The Doctor, which concluded with the earth-shattering revelation that”¦

INCOMING DOCTOR WHO SPOILERS

“¦the brilliant and memorable John Hurt is portraying a new Doctor that has never been seen until that point.

Part of the announcement from BBC News reads as follows:

Doctor Who star Matt Smith is to leave his role as the Doctor at the end of this year, the BBC has announced. After four years as the Time Lord on the BBC One show, viewers will see Smith’s Doctor regenerate in the 2013 Christmas special.

The 30-year-old actor said working on the show had been “the most brilliant experience”. Doctor Who marks its 50th anniversary in November with a special episode, which Smith has already filmed. The BBC said Smith’s “spectacular exit” was yet to be revealed and would be “kept tightly under wraps”.

The official announcement asserts that Smith will be remaining on board for the Steven Moffat-helmed 50th Anniversary Special and the 2013 Christmas Special, in which he will regenerate into the New Doctor.

The Two Nu Doctors: Matt Smith and David Tennant - Doctor Who

But, if you’ve listened to any of the TARDISblend episodes co-hosted by Tom Cheredar and myself, you’ll be familiar with the practice that the BBC often gives out a little bit of misinformation from time to time.

You’ll also remember that we predicted that this announcement would be coming.

That being said, I don’t believe that we will see Matt Smith in the Christmas Special, despite the announcement. I think that we will have a surprise regeneration at the end of the 50th Anniversary Special, in which the new Doctor will be revealed.

The rumor mill has been running crazy around the world on who the next Doctor will be – from fan circles to tabloid papers. Some of the “˜usual suspects’ have been mentioned, such as Patrick Stewart and Helen Mirren and Benedict Cumberbatch and Rupert Grint; but there’s also been some STRANGE rumors in tabloids suggesting Michael Jackson’s daughter is up for the role. Yes, I laughed at that one as well.

But I don’t think the next Doctor will be played by any of these actors.

So who will be the next Doctor? My money is on Ben Daniels, a 48-year-old British actor with a lot of credits to his name, whose name was unexpectedly surfacing a lot from some reliable sources floating around the Doctor Who rumor circles a few months ago.

Ben Daniels: The Next Doctor?

As listeners of the TARDISblend will remember, we predict that it will be Ben Daniels or a relatively unknown actor to get the role.

And it might not be long before we find out if we’re right. In news today, a source from the BBC allegedly informed Radio Times that the announcement on who the next Doctor is will come before the Christmas Special begins filming in July.

So stay tuned, Geeks Of Doom: the new Doctor is coming!

  1. The Doctor needs to continue getting younger. It will not be a 48 year old man playing the next Doctor. The best available choice is Rupert Grint. David Tennant was from Harry Potter as well but it didn’t stop him from being chosen. To follow Matt Smith they need an actor who has proven beyond any doubt that they can act and Rupert Grint is the guy.

  2. Also, he’d finally be ginger. :)

  3. I’m hoping for someone older. I think Matt Smith was just on the line of too young. Maybe not 48, but somewhere in the late 30’s would be nice, a slightly mature older Doctor, like Nine.

  4. Why not bring in a former Doctor? Like Peter Davison – who was also a very young Doctor?

  5. Because the former Doctors are no longer young and David Tennant’s Doctor already showed that keeping the same Doctor is cheating. You cannot have a repeated Doctor after they have left the show. They can bring them back for multiple Doctor episodes but only if they have the same appearance now as they did at the time of their regeneration.

  6. Not a problem – it was just a thought – but since it is established that Time-Lords are really not bound by rules as we understand them, it could be done. (“Meeting yourself is not impossible. It is just not permitted.” (A rule broken several times.)) Colin Baker played two roles, if you will recall. And the Mary Tamm to Lalla Ward regeneration showed they can take any image they want.
