Director Troy Duffy Says ‘The Boondock Saints 3’ Is Still Coming; TV Show In The Works

The Boondock Saints Image

It took a decade for fans of the cult hit The Boondock Saints to finally get a sequel, The Boondock Saints II: All Saints Day in 2009. There were many ups and downs on the road to that first sequel, so it should come as no surprise that the same thing is happening with The Boondock Saints III.

First we heard from star Sean Patrick Flanery that the trilogy-maker was being written, then his co-star Norman Reedus later said that the third installment was definitely being worked on. But something went wrong, and only a couple of days later Reedus said the movie wasn’t happening after all.

Now the man behind the movies, director Troy Duffy, is talking about the next installment, as well as the potential TV series.

Of the trilogy, Duffy assures everyone it’s still happening. Speaking to We Got This Covered, Duffy says:

“I’m still working on the third film too. I’m trying to find my way through that plot. It could start to get a little bit comic book like when you think about it. You know, these two prolific vigilante characters in prison and then they get out and have the backing of the catholic church. It could get pretty extreme.

I’m working through it though. I’m about halfway done the script. So ya, that’s definitely on the front. We’re doing a third instalment. One of the things that I’m hoping to provide fans with in the third film is a lot of answers to their questions about the brothers. The film is going to be more introspective. I don’t want to give too much away but right now I couldn’t be more pleased with how it’s turning out.”

Duffy was also sure to mention that both Flanery and Reedus are still attached to return, and that he’s hoping to get Willem Dafoe to reprise his role for the movie.

Of the possible TV series, Duffy says:

“TV show is still on the hopper here.

I’m still working on that but it’s a good question. I kind of envision a re-birth of The Boondock Saints for a new generation. With television you can go so much more in depth and tell a lot more story. I’m excited about it.”

Are you still hoping to see The Boondock Saints III happen, and would you be interested in a Boondock Saints TV series?

  3. A third movie is all but necessary for this franchise to either sink properly into cult fandom history or rise to it’s potential again. I phrase it like that because I personally feel the second movie was not as good as it could have been, that it tried a bit to hard to make some things funny, and that the serendipitous nature of their “sublime” acts was not illustrated as well as it was in the first movie. The concept of a television series is rather interesting, but would ride on the ending of a third movie.

  9. Yes, third Boondocks please. But this can be a tough sell to the weaker religious sector since the church all but offered to financially back the brothers. Skeptics will say this is beyond tolerable to their fragile faith. But these films were never made for them. Maybe the plot line can be more of a church vs church theme where some upper echelons agree to let the boys continue and others try to put a stop to it. C’mon. We all know the Vatican runs most finances around the world. Imagine the stunt scenes and psychological mind wars that would stem from this! And if the boys could expand and hire everyday joes to help and build a new movement…man this could shake the ground our politicians stand on. So this movie needs to happen. Duffy: it’s on you. Bring it baby!

  13. I hear a lot of complaints about the second movie, but mostly the complaints come from casual saints watchers who might have seen the movie once, not big fans. Personally, I thought the second movie was absolutely epic. Sure, it didn’t have the SAME flair as the first, but it had a lot of flair of it’s own. Romeo is a fantastic sidekick, they could not possibly have replaced Rocco with a better character. I hope Troy doesn’t mind those who didn’t like the 2nd movie, and still makes a 3rd for those of us who did!

    Comment by Daniel — February 5, 2014 @ 3:03 pm

  14. Amen, Zach. The second one had its moments (“Hey, you don’t know me, do these make me look gay? Yeah, you mighta seen one up close.”) But overall it did feel contrived. I enjoyed the backstory of “Il Duce”, but I really didn’t care for Julie Benz’ character. As far as 3 goes…does Rocco make another appearance from the afterlife? With Greenbeans demise, does the Boston P.D. figure in at all? Hmmm….

    Comment by Will Stone — February 9, 2014 @ 8:12 pm

  15. Duffy hell yeah the 3 movies plus a show its going down in history as your greatest work your master piece I just can’t wait to witness it

  16. i would love to see a third movie ! as for the tv show if like HBO or the such picked it up that would be epic a no holds bar show is what it would need to be. i dont see it running on regular cable due to the nature of the films being so graphic but if HBO or something picked it up they could keep the violence profanity and all the shit we love and not have to sacrifice anything really. I hope it happens love the movies love the brothers love the story.

    Comment by Luis Aponte — March 16, 2014 @ 2:51 pm

  17. it Has to have both Reedus and Flannery in the movie and idk if a show without them would work either i doubt it… Willem has to be in the movie as well though i think the show could make it without him it would be better if he was in it, and id like to see a comic boy like escalation and the only show id watch instead of this should they be competing is supernatural.

  19. I’d love to see there be a third movie, a agree the second wasn’t as good as May it could have been but it’s was still good. Everyone will always compare it to the first one, nothing will ever beat Boondock I. I’d like there to be a bit more back story on the brothers, not all of it but maybe flashes or something or the beginning kicked off with something epic that happened in their childhood. Fans all know that Connor and Murphy are twins, but is that ever mentioned? Honestly asking. I know it’s not in the first one.

The idea of a TV series is interesting but with so many being over critical of the sequels, there’d be a lot of pressure on a TV series. I thnk too much would be forced. Although, a re-birth for a new generation would be cool. Maybe a TV series is if that’s done. New brothers, maybe cameos of Sean and Norman. If that’s the case, then the cast would have to make it there own.

There could never be another Connor and Murphy MacManus like Sean Patrick Flanery and Norman Reedus

    Comment by Jenna L — March 23, 2014 @ 4:46 pm

  20. Sean’s already said he wouldn’t do a show without Norman. Daryl would have to die for Norm to be available.

    Comment by Jenna L — March 23, 2014 @ 4:48 pm

  21. if they going to make a tv serie , i asume its going to be crap like ;(. that is because the movies ( 1st movie ) was good but with the secend movie so bad and crapy – the tv serie would probly be like bad crap like the serie CSI .. if they gona make a serie please make it connectable – dont make it like one episode is about that and the next is about somthing els – i want to see more – :)

  32. I loved the first Boondock Saint and II was alright…Norman Reedus has been great on The Walking Dead and I’d watch a part 3 of Boondock Saints but I’m not gonna buy cable for it so make it avalabile in real time(like the Veronica Mars movie was) on itunes or netflix…none of that HB-HO crap that they are doing with Game of Thrones. Oh and I’m a girl so it’d be kinda nice if you could have a female character that could manage to be authentic for the series and the plot without being a passed out stripper or drugged out skank…unless you can do that in a believable way; a 3 dimensional way rather than a token type way- which doesn’t seem likely if Troy Duffy is gonna write the whole thing.

Anyway, I’d watch it regardless via online pay- netflix, hulu or itunes.

    Comment by I'd watch it — April 27, 2014 @ 12:21 am

  33. Ummm William Defoe? His heyday was before your time but he has been good in a lot of stuff and it was his character in the first film you didn’t like prolly. Oh and yeah, part 2 wasn’t as good as part 1 but it wasn’t half bad and Norman Reedus has remained pretty sexy. And yeah…if anything related to the series is missing EITHER of the brothers it will NOT work.

  36. I completely agree Daniel. Those who are TRUE fans, completely appreciate the second film.I traveled over 200 miles to see this film on opening day, as it was only playing in “select” theaters, and it did not disappoint I definitely appreciated the backstory of Il Duce, and it put many things into perspective. I was glad to see the return of Rocco, even if it was a dream sequence, and even though he could never take his place, I felt Romeo was a nice addition. While the second movie took on more of a comedic role than the first, it still portrayed the “Saints” message. I am a die-hard fan, and felt that the second movie was great. The ending set up a third movie perfectly, and personally I can’t wait for it to come out. Kudos to Mr. Duffy, I can’t wait to see what you have in store..and if you need an extra for the third installment, I’m totally available :)

RIGHT after supernatural? that would make my night entirely but hopefully they dont screw up and put it to where its not the same characters for the saints because thats just going to piss alot of people off

  55. I Agree with all of this, I hope the movie is long-lengthened film, so it gives time and effort devoted to whatever needs to be explained before and presently. Other than that, based on the tv series, will the it be the main actors starring themselves, or a complete different story, could it be Live Action, C.G/Cartoon?
