Scott Beale over at Laughing Squid snapped the photo above of various superheroes, like Batman and Captain America, and Sesame Street characters sitting on docked Citi Bikes in New York City.
Beale had no idea why there was such a gathering and I haven’t been able to find out anything about it either, but it is a peculiar sight, even in New York City. It would be one thing if this scenario took place in Times Square, where low-budget costumers fill the streets to get tourists to pay to take photos with them. But, this photo was taken on Centre Street, which is downtown near the courts, where you’re not likely to see the more eccentric side of Manhattan.
Head over to Laughing Squid to see a larger view of the photo.
The Citi Bikes pay bike share program is a new addition to the city, but it’s had its fair share of controversy since over 300 docking stations were put into place in May. City residents have been up in arms about the placement of the docking stations, from rightfully complaining that some of them are taking up prime parking spaces, to claiming they’re getting in the way of their jay walking, to stating that they’re just plain unsightly. (The city’s massive brigade of food cart vendors wasn’t too pleased either.) The city has responded by moving some of the stations out of affluent neighborhoods and moving others out of parking spaces, but the controversy rages on. But, aside from the complainers and the actual bike riders taking advantage of this new bike share program, there’s another another faction: those who find a way to use the bikes without paying for them, which is basically what this costumed gang is doing. (As it turns out, you can use them as free exercise machines if you’re willing to pedal backwards.)
