Lemmy Kilmister, the iconic frontman of heavy rock band Motorhead, is “alive and kicking,” according to the band’s guitarist, Phil Campbell, who posted the update to his Twitter page after his bandmate took ill on Friday, August 2, causing the band to shorten their set at the Wacken Open Air festival in Wacken, Germany. Since the event, rumors have been swirling through social media networks about Lemmy’s health and possible death, which prompted the official response from the band.
This is the second time this year that the band had to issue a “Lemmy is still alive” statement to the public, the first time being in June when Motorhead had to cancel some tour dates after the 67-year-old frontman suffered a haematoma and was given doctor’s orders to “rest.” Soon after, the band cancelled most of their upcoming European festival tour dates, but kept themselves on the bill for the Wacken festival. The band took the stage at Wacken, but ended up cutting their set short to six songs after Lemmy’s health started failing.
According to a post on the official Motorhead Facebook page, even though Lemmy know he wasn’t 100 percent up to the gig, he didn’t want put out of the festival and let the fans down:
The show had to go on because that’s how Lemmy rolls. Even though he was not 100% fit, he refused to feel he was letting the 85,000 Wacken fans down. They kicked ass in the 100+degree heat for a shortened, but powerful, set before, Lemmy finally realized he might have bitten off a little more than he could chew. Thus he will embark upon the recuperation recommended. We know that rumors are flying around, but once he fully recharges, Motörhead will be back, don’t you worry!
Here’s the tweet from Phil Campbell regarding the rumors of Lemmy’s health.
Contrary to some reports, Lem is alive and kicking so take no notice of these rumours from asshole tweeters
You can watch a 3-song video excerpt – “Damage Case,” “Metropolis,” and “Over The Top” – from the concert here below. The other songs performed were “I Know How To Die,” “Stay Clean,” and “The Chase Is Better Than The Catch.”
Motörhead, which consists of Lemmy Kilmister on bass and vocals, Phil Campbell on guitars, and Mikkey Dee on drums, released the 2012 double live album The Wörld Is Ours – Vol 2: Anyplace Crazy, As Anywhere Else on CD, CD/DVD, and MP3, as the follow-up to their live concert DVD and Blu-ray, The World Is Ours – Vol 1: Everything Further Than Everyplace. Their next studio album, titled Aftershock, is due out this Fall. Lemmy was also the main focus of the 2010 documentary, Lemmy.

I just want to say how thankful I am that I wasn’t writing an obituary for Lemmy this week and that the old road warrior is going to be all right. We’re definitely keeping him our thoughts here at GoD and looking forward to seeing Motorhead live again (for the millionth time!) in the near future.
