D23 Expo provided many opportunities to make some big announcements during Marvel’s portion of the live-action panel. While the studio didn’t take advantage of making any news regarding who may be voicing Rocket Raccoon in Guardians of the Galaxy, Vin Diesel, who was speculated to play a completely different character in The Avengers: Age of Ultron, took it upon himself to post a picture of Groot on his official Facebook page – which has since been deleted. This posting led many to believe that he would be the voice of the tree-like alien.
While Disney/Marvel have yet to confirm Diesel as the voice of Groot, the actor wasn’t exactly shying away from talking about the character, why he decided to post the picture during Disney’s fan convention, and whether or not it got him in trouble.
Here’s what Diesel told the LA Times’ Hero Complex about why he chose to be the voice of Groot:
“I’m an actor. I can do whatever the “¦ I want. As an actor, not everything has to be the most obvious choice. And sometimes, the best thing you can do “” as far as Steven Spielberg and his advice “” is to defy expectations. So if everybody thinks you’re going to go for this one thing and you flip it entirely and go for the strangest Marvel character, it’s interesting. And when something is interesting, it’s inspiring.”
When asked why he posted a picture of Groot this weekend, Diesel responded:
“I get inspired by things. So if somebody sends me a book of conceptual art that’s the best character design work I’ve ever seen “” I’m not kidding, I see that and I want to be a little cryptic and I want to say something positive. Even if it’s as cryptic as an old, dated image of a character.”
Diesel had this to say about being open to his fans while working for a studio that is notoriously secretive:
“The last thing they are is mad. I’m pretty open, but I have been secretive about this. I went to Comic-Con and I got blasted while I was on the Hall H panel for ‘Riddick.’ Someone asked a Marvel question. I couldn’t say anything because of that secrecy.”
This will not be the first time that Diesel has done voice acting. The actor lent his vocal talents as the voice of the titular character in Brad Bird’s The Iron Giant.
Directed by James Gunn, Guardians of the Galaxy opens in theaters on August 1, 2014
