Edgar Wright Talks Making ‘Ant-Man’ A Simple Standalone Film

Edgar Wright

Long before we could ever believe that we see Iron Man, Captain America, Thor, and the Hulk on one screen, Edgar Wright was working on an Ant-Man movie. Out of all the heroes that Wright could have picked to make an adaptation of, he picked Ant-Man. But, in all honesty, it couldn’t be more of a perfect it.

Now that we have seen how the Marvel Cinematic Universe has been established, we are moving on to the second phase of it all. As we have seen with Iron Man 3, Phase 2 isn’t as overly concerned with trying to create a set up to the next Avengers. These installments are standalone, and Wright says that while Ant-Man has been rewritten to fit into the Marvel Cinematic Universe, it will be more of a standalone film. Hit the jump to read his comments.

“I think it’s just doing its own thing in the accepted history but it’s still part of the other movies and always was. In the time I’ve been working on it other things have happened in the other movies that could be affected in this. It is pretty standalone in the way we’re linking it to the others. I like to make it standalone because I think the premise of it needs time. I want to put the crazy premise of it into a real world, which is why I think ‘Iron Man’ really works because it’s a relatively simple universe; it’s relatable. I definitely want to go into finding a streamlined format where you use the origin format to introduce the main character and further adventures can bring other people into it. I’m a big believer in keeping it relatively simple and Marvel agrees on that front.”

Ant-Man is one of the lesser known characters of the Marvel Universe, but he was one of the founders of The Avengers in the comics. Still he isn’t as popular as Iron Man, Hulk, Captain America, Spider-Man, or Wolverine. But I like that he says that Ant-Man needs to be standalone because its premise of Ant-Man needs time and that Marvel is allowing him to keep Ant-Man simple. Even though the films are becoming more interconnective, seeing films like Ant-Man or Guardians of the Galaxy allows the studio to branch out a little more without having to worry about how it will have an effect on future films.
