What does sacrifice mean to you? This is a question at the very heart of the graphic novel Sacrifice by Sam Humphries and Dalton Rose. Offering a mind-blowing look into the past and present, this visionary work From Dark Horse examines the very depths of humanity.

Hector has suffered from epilepsy since he was a child””never knowing when the next seizure might overcome his body. He’s had a fascination with the Aztecs since childhood as well. Now, as a teenager and during his most recent epileptic episode, Hector is transported back in time toward the end of Aztec civilization. Learning to live amongst the long lost people while still trying to find a way home, Hector quickly becomes engrossed in the sacrificial culture, torn between rival tribes; but as history begins to unfold before Hector’s eyes, his knowledge and visions of the future may be the only hope and salvation for the people he’s come to love””even more so than he could ever imagine.

Humphries has crafted a superb tale of sacrificial love versus sacrifice to appease the gods. He introduces characters
with real heart and soul, ensuring devotion from his readers. This is by no means a simplistic read. With hallucinatory visions, moral decisions that affect empires and various plot twists, Sacrifice is a graphic novel of profound literary qualities.

Rose illustrates Sacrifice with a stunning blend of vivid imagery and trippy transitions. The Aztec era emanates off the page with a wide range of colors and bold character depictions allowing the entire graphic novel to feel like one massive delirium.

Sacrifice pulled me in from the start and wouldn’t let me go. I was engaged with the characters and the powerful story all the way through. Once finished, there was an overwhelmingly bittersweet feeling as I was completely satisfied with the ending but wasn’t ready to let go. I can’t wait to check out Humphries’ next tale.
