BBC Teen Exorcists

Apparently, this exists: Teen Exorcists, a BBC reality TV series about three American teenage girls who are… you guessed it … Exorcists.

Watch a clip here below from the show, where the wholesome young girls explain that the spells in the Harry Potter universe are actually real and dangerous, and that although Harry uses his magic for good, ALL magic is bad because, well, it comes from Satan.

Magic ÏŸ Satan.

I think I just found my favorite new TV show.

All magic is bad because you’re getting your power from Satan.

  4. As a bible believing conservative Christian, I have to #facepalm in embarrassment. Sometimes Christians are so heavenly conscious, they’re no earthly good. I apologize.

  5. Ugh. This is kind of how I felt when I saw pirated copies of Michael Moore movies being sold by a local vendor in Iraq. Like, “Oh, dear god, please don’t take your impression of my country from this.”

TL;DR version: (Note, I am not a Christian; I simply educate myself on what I am criticizing prior to criticizing it) In Mainstream Christianity, true miracles are performed in the name of God and only by his power. Other apparent miracles are the work of evil powers trying to seduce “ignorant” people. Sort of like a worm on a hook. These women are perfectly normal Christians saying things that fit true Christian belief.

    Long Version:

Consider a few things. First, this is clipped. As in, they aren’t actually showing everything the girls said, just the highlights, and in that case, the highlights that a British director believes are relevant to a show that – like many British shows – has some obvious thought given to “Yes, we don’t REALLY have our empire anymore, but we did conquer a quarter of the world and we really are still better than everyone else, and here’s why.”

Second, if you’re a little more familiar with the concepts they are discussing, they aren’t saying that Harry Potter is a satanist. What they are indicating is that some of the spells – like any decent fantasy novel – are based in actual Pagan rituals in some way, even if only just by borrowing words. I don’t know if this is totally true for even a majority of the “spells.” I mean, hell, the “death curse” is just “abracadabra” mush-mouthed. But, given that’s where she started and how quickly they went from very childish plots to much more mature writing, I could see her trying to “serious-up” the writing a little by basing new spells off of actual Wiccan or other Pagan concepts rather than stuff from street magicians.

And, from a Biblical take on Christianity, there are only people who accept God and people who have rejected God. There is no spiritual Switzerland. Now, while such doctrinal emphasis on satan as a power is more tradition than doctrinal (and arguably not Biblical at all), it is perfectly within normal Christian doctrine that if you are doing miraculous things that fall into the supernatural category, and if these are not the result of praying to God and asking him to do it, it’s being done by powers diametrically opposed to and in rebellion against God. Thus, by transitive powers, if you do magic and you aren’t saying, “in Jesus’ name” at the end, it’s a satanic spell.

But, also, these girls aren’t saying that people dressing up as Harry to go see the movies have just jumped on the express to hell and human sacrifice. They believe in the “gateway drug” hypothesis, and that things like Harry Potter romanticize “magic” and might lead people to take an interest in Wicca or other Pagan belief systems, which, since they do not invoke the power of the Christian God in their ceremonies, are by that fact worshiping “satan.” And yes that’s silly, but marijuana is illegal on most of this country, so I don’t know that we as a society have much room to judge them as any more silly than most of the rest of the population.

And a point here, Christians aren’t so stupid they think Pagans are worshiping actual satan directly. The idea is that those people have been deluded and into worshiping “false gods” that serve as distractions from the “true” God. Essentially, unless you worship God-god, you are just worshiping a hologram calling itself the Wizard of Oz. And, since in that scenario someone needs to be behind the curtain, we then arrive at why, though such a minor character in the actual Bible, satan is such a pivotal character in doctrine.

I will say, these women strike me like someone with a learner’s permit for a moped trying to fly a space shuttle, but most “authorities” on spiritual matters fall into that category. Still, while they may be largely clueless, that kind of just makes them fit in with the larger part of the human populace than it makes them stand out.

And, fyi, if you are a Christian and you don’t agree with her last statement, you aren’t actually a Christian by any Biblical definition that exists. Which is fine. Personally, I’m not anything myself, but I also can’t stand people who claim a belief system and are absolutely clueless as to what that belief system actually is.

  6. The sad thing is, you are as ignorant as the women in the video. You just find your prejudicial misunderstanding of their belief system to be more acceptable than their prejudicial misunderstanding of other belief systems.

  7. As a non-Christian, I think you might want to read more Bible.

  8. The bible does say do not suffer a witch to live. So, if they are believers, they should be killing people who read Rowling books, right?

    Anddddddddddddd, that’s why religion sucks.

  10. Yep, Britain’s a hotbed of witches and boy wizards. Its true! We are the nation that brought you Ozzy Osbourne and Venom. JK Rowling is the devil. Seriously girls, have a word with yourselves – money is one of the true evils in this world and the so-called man of religion guiding your ‘career’ has $$$$ in his eyes! Religious vomit! I bet you think dinosaurs are made-up too…
