NYCC 2013: IDW Publishing: G.I. Joe-Transformers Ongoing Series

I am a child of the 80s, so of course there is a special place in my heart for both G.I. Joe and Transformers, and I love both of the comic series that IDW Publishing is currently releasing, so I am doubly excited to hear that the publisher is going to be releasing a new ongoing series teaming up the two properties.

What has me even more excited is that the series is going to be co-written and drawn by Tom Scioli (Godland). Scioli will be joined by Transformers veteran writer John Barber on writing duties, with the series set to release in the summer of 2014.

If you’ve never seen Scioli’s art, he has a style that is heavily influenced by Jack Kirby, and matching these two sets of characters with Scioli’s style should make for an interesting looking book. According to IDW, the series is “cosmic in scale” and will “utilize Scioli’s unique artwork to traverse the perils of space and pit the G.I. Joe team against the ominous threats of Cybertron.”

“This is a dream project for me,” says Barber, “and I’m blown away by the imagination and the unique take that Tom Scioli is bringing to this project. It harkens back to classic comic traditions—and to the origins of the TRANSFORMERS and G.I. JOE characters—but feels constantly, irrepressibly new!”

“This feels like the comic I was born to make,” says Scioli. “We’re asking big questions. Is war an inevitable condition of life? What is free will? What is the future of man and machine as the line between them becomes increasingly blurred? The G.I. JOE team is trained to deal with dangerous situations and this is the ultimate test of their training. The TRANSFORMERS characters push the boundaries of what shapes life can take in this infinite universe of ours. Perhaps it will be a machine that teaches us what it is to be human.”

There’s a lot to be excited about here, I’m just sad that it’s going to take a while before we see this. But oh is it going to be worth it. If you’ve never seen Scioli’s artwork, I highly recommend picking up one of the trades for Godland, which is set to wrap up in November. I can’t wait to read this one already.
