James Gunn Directed A Mid-Credits Scene For ‘Thor: The Dark World’
BAADASSSSS!   |

Thor: The Dark World Header

My, how the time just flies. I had forgotten that the release for the latest Marvel Studios blockbuster Thor: The Dark World was getting close. Not because I wasn’t looking forward to it – I am a committed Marvel movie fanboy – but because lately I’ve been terribly busy at home. In a little over two weeks the second solo screen adventure of Chris Hemsworth‘s mighty thunder god with the impeccable blonde mane will hit theaters from Barcelona to Bakersfield.

One of the big question marks surrounding the release is what we can expect from the inevitable post-credits teaser scene. Iron Man 3 cleverly subverted such expectations by ending on a jokey note, but Dark World‘s final mystery scene looks to give audiences who weren’t in attendance at this year’s San Diego Comic-Con at Marvel’s next big movie gamble – August 2014′s Guardians of the Galaxy.

And Dark World director Alan Taylor ain’t too happy about that.

The Sopranos/Game of Thrones helmsman has been waging his own epic battles with the studio over the length and tone of his movie’s final cut since production wrapped. It seems that Taylor wasn’t involved in the filming of the post-credits scenes, and in fact there will be not one but two bonus scenes guaranteed to kick those moviegoer butts firmly in their scenes even when Thor’s newest action spectacular comes to a close. The first of which will be shown midway through the end credits.

Taylor was queried about the content of those teasers by Bleeding Cool’s Brendon Connelly during the recent press day for Dark World in London. After denying being a part of shooting those scenes he was asked if one or both of them were directed by Guardians‘ fearless behind-the-camera leader James Gunn, to which Taylor replied, “I wouldn’t blame it on James Gunn…er, I wouldn’t attribute it to James Gunn. It’s clearly his sets and his characters.”

When asked for additional clarification about those extra scenes Taylor offered only vague answers as to what Marvel fans can look forward to seeing for themselves in a few weeks:

“It’s a different tone. I would have shot it differently….The ‘Guardians’ universe is really cool and wacky, but that sequence in the credits, I would say, is the only part of the movie where I’m happy to give the credit away.”

Connolly later spoke to Marvel Studios’ president of production Kevin Feige, who confirmed that the Dark World mid-credits scene was directed by Gunn and was shot in London within the past month.

Since production on Guardians was in full swing in London for the past several months until wrapping recently it’s pretty definite now that we will be getting our first full look at the cosmic super-team in action during Dark World‘s end credits. Similar to the extra surprises we saw in The Avengers the summer before last, Dark World‘s first bonus scene will hint at greater things to come in the Marvel Movieverse while the second will likely be a Shawarma-style gag.

Thor: The Dark World opens on November 8, 2013.

Well, makes sense as “The Avengers” set up an alliance between Thanos and Loki. Thanos wants the Infinity Gauntlet and by getting himself taken back to Asgard, Loki’s in a good position to get ahold of it for him (it’s seen when the Jotun try to steal the Cask of Winters in “Thor”). Thanos is probably going to play a notable role in “Guardians of the Galaxy”, so when better than the end credits of this movie to deliver it to him or one of his underlings?

At least, I hope that’s what the deal is as it would make a lot of sense and tie the films together well, building off the very end of Phase 1 into the arc of Phase 2.
