It’s a bit ironic that the first trailer for Captain America: The Winter Soldier comes a couple of days after the end of the U.S. government shutdown. We see our hero, Captain America (Chris Evans), continuing to struggle living in the contemporary world. Though he still has that classic 1940’s charm and sentiment, Captain America is now fully realizing how dangerous secret government agencies can really be when corrupt bureaucrats and politicians have agendas and motivations they are pushing for. On top of that, there is a dangerous assassin on the loose who bares a striking resemblance to a fallen friend.
There is a lot to take in, but one thing is clear, Captain America: The Winter Soldier is going to be one very exciting film. Hit the jump to see the new trailer.
The film mirrors Iron Man 3‘s unconventional superhero themes. While Iron Man 3 had that traditional Shane Black buddy cop vibe, Marvel Studios Kevin Feige promises that Captain America: The Winter Soldier will be a political thriller. Not that surprising considering how much of the film takes place in Washington D.C. – just how many helicarriers can they hide underground? We also get to see a bit of the Falcon (Anthony Mackie) in some high flying death defying action.
This trailer doesn’t hold back. It shows that Cap’s patriotism will be greatly tested. Does he fight for the America he once knew, or does he throw away those ideals for the new world that Robert Redford is talking about? We will have to see.
Directed by Anthony and Joe Russo, Captain America: The Winter Soldier stars Cobie Smulders, Frank Grillo, Emily VanCamp, Hayley Atwell, and Samuel L. Jackson. The film opens in theaters on April 4, 2014.
