‘Oldboy’ Remake’s Newest Poster; Spike Lee Talks Studio Cutting Important Scene

The long-awaited reinterpretation of Oldboy by Spike Lee, if only to find out just how faithful he’s going to be to the source material, comes out next week and in anticipation the film is getting one more new poster to help drum up interest. The poster revels in an explosion of violence that we should expect from the Oldboy via the protagonist’s weapon of choice, along with the tagline “Find the Truth and Make It Hurt” which overtly suggests we’re in for some brutal carnage.

Along with this poster, Spike Lee revealed a minor non-plot spoiler for his film during an interview with the New York Times revolving around the original film’s signature hallway fight sequence.

Check out the full poster here below and what Lee has to say about his film.

In a piece with the New York Times centering around Lee, the original hallway sequence from Oldboy is discussed and how it was translated into his version of the story:

The most difficult challenge for [star Josh] Brolin and Mr. Lee was reinventing the original film’s centerpiece fight sequence: a side-scrolling, ferociously violent hallway battle in which the protagonist slays dozens of enemies, mostly with a hammer, all in one uninterrupted long shot. Not one to back away from a challenge, Mr. Lee said he tripled the length of the fight sequence and expanded the set from one hallway to three parking lot ramps.

Because they were aiming to get it in one shot, Mr. Brolin trained for six weeks to memorize the choreography. After seven complete takes, Mr. Brolin has said, he broke down in tears. That scene, however, along with much of Mr. Lee’s initial, three-hour cut, was trimmed by the studio to make the final version’s 102-minute run time.

“It’s not one shot,” Mr. Lee said. “There’s a cut in it. Shouldn’t be, but there is a cut.”

Lee provided his displeasure on the fight being trimmed and forcing a cut into the originally uninterrupted shot:

“There’s no reason to try and even attempt that shot unless it’s a one-take,” he said, scowling through his tortoiseshell glasses. “That’s the scene from the original! That’s the scene!”

This is really unfortunate, as Josh Brolin trained for weeks in order to accomplish this shot, and fans of the original film may not realize that it was the studio, not Lee, that made the cut and broke the flow of the sequence. For fans of the original, who will undoubtedly scrutinize every aspect of the remake, this will certainly be toward the top of the list.

However, without seeing the sequence it is hard to say how much it will affect the intensity of the fight. At the very least hopefully we’ll at least get to see the entire uninterrupted shot when Oldboy eventually gets its home release.

Oldboy will be released November 27th.

  1. It no doubt will hurt the overall wow-factor of the scene — especially to those who never saw the original scene. Still, I’m not going to poo-poo the film because of this disappointing development without having seen it yet.
