Top 5 TV Bad Guys

Sometimes we hate bad guys. The combination of excellent writing, directing, and acting for a villain can get us lost in the story and in our distaste for the character. I have a huge amount of respect for actors and television shows that can pull this off; however, there is another type of antagonist that I think we can all appreciate just as much, if not more. I’m sure you guessed it by the title: it’s the maniacal big baddies who not only scare us, but also make us laugh with glee. Check out this list below of crazy television bad guys we can’t help but love. I think you’ll agree – but feel free to comment and let us know who your favorites are too!

Here’s 5 Crazy TV Bad Guys We Can’t Help But Love

Mayor Richard Wilkins – Buffy The Vampire SlayerBuffy the Vampire Slayer: Harry Groener as Mayor Richard Wilkins

Mayor Wilkins (Harry Groener) has an old-fashioned and even wholesome air that makes the contrast with his true evil identity to be even more evident. He is very disciplined and is a true believer in cleanliness, orderliness and proper language. Oddly, he seems to love the troubled Faith like a daughter, even if he is sending her out to fulfill his dark tasks. In Buffy, power often brings about the forces of darkness, and Mayor Wilkins utilizing his position to ascend into a dragon-like demon definitely fits the bill. And even though he is a bad, bad man, this colorful character is sure fun to watch.

Rumpelstiltskin – Once Upon A TimeOnce Upon A Time: Robert Carlyle as Rumpelstiltskin

If you have watched Once Upon A Time, the word “dearie” and sound of light-yet-eerie laughter hearken to the fan-favorite Rumpelstiltskin. Robert Carlyle plays “the dark one” brilliantly – dashing around, twirling his hands and smiling with that ugly, yellow-toothed grin. Although he feigns at finding redemption, it is my personal opinion that he is self-serving and fearful by nature. No matter how it turns out, Rumple is arguably the best part of the show, with his surprising range of emotions, mysterious appearances and his famous deals. If you haven’t seen it for yourself, I highly recommend a search on Rumpelstiltskin’s giggle. You won’t regret it. You’re welcome.

The Master – Doctor Who (2005)Doctor Who: John Simm as The Master

I couldn’t find a clip of The Master that wasn’t equal parts humorous and entertaining and scary; but maybe that’s why John Simm’s interpretation of the character is so memorable. In my opinion, there is no other storyline in the new Doctor Who series that is as touching and complex as the arc between The Doctor, The Master and the World. The Master is so perfectly evil and genius that, as the viewer, you want to see what plans he might come up with while also hoping he is defeated first. The Doctor loves his childhood friend but know he must stop him. The Master is terrifying but so, so fun.

Russell Edgington – True BloodTrue Blood: Denis O Hare as Russell Edgington

Russell Edgington (Denis O’Hare). He has done so many awful and disgusting things. He killed a news anchor and then made a threatening speech on national television. He slaughtered Eric Northman’s entire Viking family. And in this clip, you will see that he is about to go all kinds of vampire crazy at karaoke night. But Russell sings; he laughs; he swaggers. In the video, we see Russell appear out of the darkness of a bar stage and join a saccharine singing newlywed in a rendition of “You Light up My Life.” Enjoy. He may be off the show, but his character will live on forever.

Q – Star Trek: The Next GenerationStar Trek: The Next Generation: John de Lancie as Q

He’s arrogant. He toys with humans like they are dolls to poke and prod at his disposal. As a superior being, Q (John de Lancie) decides to have a trial against all of Humanity, with Captain Jean-Luc Picard as the representative of the human race – which was all, of course, another of his tests in the end. In one of my favorite scenes featuring Q and the Captain of the USS Enterprise-D, Q claims to be God in the afterlife when Picard has presumably died. Picard was then given the opportunity to go back in time and change the course of events from his past to avoid this fatal future. Generally, we are always wondering if there is some shred of morality in Q, or if it is simply his curiosity that causes him to interact with Picard the way he does. I think it’s the curiosity (feel free to disagree with me there). Q is omnipotent, obnoxious and hilarious. Q is the ultimate, awesome master of hijinks.

  4. Spike was a great bad guy … until he became a great good guy.
Heisenberg wasn’t a “fun” bad guy, and I certainly never loved him. Same with Omar.
John Simm’s Master was a fantastic source of evil glee dressed up in a very sexy package. The only time he was “good” was when his hatred for Rassilon outweighed his need to best the Doctor.
