Where the hell was this book when I was younger? Do you know how tough it was out there in the years before “Geek Enlightenment” existed? Okay, well maybe some of you do. And now that it’s chic to be geek, you would think there wouldn’t still be a need for a book like this. But you, my friend, couldn’t be more wrong. The Geek’s Guide To Dating is not just entertaining, it’s just as helpful as a Prima strategy guide.
Amid all the references to Doctor Who, Star Trek, and numerous video games, there is a massive amount of useful knowledge. Whether you have trouble meeting that certain someone in a chat room or (gasp) real life, this little self-help book has several hints (cheat codes, if you will) to assist in making it to the next level without getting shot down. Because, let’s be honest, there aren’t a whole lot of save points in life. And you most certainly cannot reboot your story to issue #1 in order to pretend an event didn’t happen.
Referring to the reader as Player One, this book seems at first designed for those with the XY chromosome, rather than those with XX. But truth be told, there is something for both genders here. My guess is that since the book was written by a guy, there is more familiarity with the situation(s) from a man’s point of view. And while I am sure there are some lady geeks out there who have trouble finding their significant other, it’s been my personal experience that women are far more confident in the dating game than their male counterparts. Granted, there’s no official data to my statement, merely my perception of my nervousness versus theirs. But I digress, author Eric Smith even takes a moment to address (and hopefully alleviate) the concerns of the geeky gals. He asks them to think of this book as a glimpse into the mind of a geeky guy and perhaps “lower the difficulty level a bit? (But not too much…he’s gotta earn that high score.)”
Really, though. This isn’t your average self-help nonsense. And I’m probably more affectionate towards it because of the random Highlander reference and all of the Star Wars comments throughout the book, but it’s really a fun and inspiring read. This guide touches on not just how, but when, to talk to the ladies. There are also parts dedicated to cleaning up your “Batmobile” and changing out of your tee and jeans and putting on some decent threads for your date. It most definitely covers a lot of ground in its two hundred pages. The choose-your-own adventure chapter was funny but pointed. But the big takeaway here is that you will fail, it is going to happen. But just as when you’re gaming, you get back up dust yourself off (hopefully just emotionally, if the date knocked you on your bum then you did something WAY wrong) and go at it again. Learn from your mistakes and life will be so much better for you. And don’t forget “do or do not, there is no try” because Yoda totally nailed it with that one.
This is the essential dating guide for those friends that need a helping hand. Maybe you didn’t have trouble but there are those who do, depending on the time frame, I was one of them. It doesn’t take much to shake up the confidence of some of our nerdy brethren. And if you can help someone else find happiness, why wouldn’t you? This would be a great gift during this gift-giving season. (It make our Holiday Geek Gift Guide 2013: Books and eBooks.) Don’t hesitate, grab a copy today!
