‘X-Men: Days Of Future Past’ Writer Explains How Wolverine Becomes A Time Traveler

X-Men: Days Of Future Past Image 03

If you have watched the first trailer for Bryan Singer‘s X-Men: Days OF Future Past already, you might have noticed some changes made to the plot that’s been ripped from story arc of the same name. Specifically the one where Wolverine (Hugh Jackman) travels back in time and not Kitty Pryde (Ellen Page).

In the comics, Kitty is the one who is sent back in time to warn the X-Men of the impending war against mutants. This left a few wondering, why make such a change, especially for an iconic story like “Days of Future Past.” Well writer Simon Kinberg took some time to offer an explanation as to why the decision was made, and you can read what he had to say below.

In an interview with Total Film, Kinberg said:

We made the decision for a lot of reasons, some of them obvious and some of them more nuanced, to make it Wolverine who goes back in time. One reason is that he’s the protagonist of the franchise, and probably the most beloved character to a mass audience.

Probably the bigger reason is that when we started thinking about the logistical realities of Kitty’s consciousness being sent back in time, to her younger self, as opposed to her physical body being sent back..it was impossible. Obviously in the book it’s Kitty, but you’re talking about an actress (Ellen Page) who, in the age of Michael Fassbender and James McAvoy, would have been negative 20 years old. So we started thinking again, and the first reflex response to that was a character who doesn’t age. Wolverine is the only character who would looks the same in 1973 as he does in the future.

Pretty interesting explanation, especially since the rules of time travel are always being bent. But in this case, it makes a lot more sense since Kitty Pryde did not exist during the First Class era, whereas the Wolverine did. But considering how much audiences really want to see a heroine be the focal point of a film, taking a character like Kitty Pryde out of the picture can upset those fans and fans who want the film to stay true to the story.

What are your thoughts on Kinberg’s reasoning for the change?

  1. Most beloved character to a mass audience? I’m tired of Wolverine and the studio pushing him all the time.

  3. It makes sense dramatically. This is what film adaptation is all about. What works well in book form does not always translate well to film.

  4. I like how they try to pretend it’s because Ellen Paige’s character would be too young. Of course they sent Wolverine back instead of her because Wolverine has more star power. At least be honest with us guys. Come on!

  5. I’m excited for the film but not happy they changed it. I understand, I just don’t like it.

  7. you are correct plus its been proven many many times, that women leads in action movies geared towards men does not work. I do not want to watch a 2 1/2hr movie with Juno running around the whole time not doing anything but making her duck face.

  8. Hunger Games says hello.

  9. If that’s the explanation then Wolverine shouldn’t have gray hair as shown in the trailer
