For those who don’t know, the Video Game Awards were held this weekend. But instead of being the VGAs, as people were familiar with, they were instead called VGX (the “next generation of video game awards”). And instead of being a traditional awards ceremony with big new game trailers and announcements (which is really all anyone cares about; fan-voted awards are a waste of everyone’s time), as most look forward to, it was instead people hanging around and trying to be funny (followed by immensely awkward silences), with winners announced here and there in odd order. At least that’s what I gather from those who did watch the event. I personally decided not to even bother watching as soon as I found out they were only going to stream the awards, not air it on Spike TV like usual (COPS was on! Yeah…). A truly disastrous attempt at unnecessary change.
All of that said there were a couple bright spots in the one area you can rely on: the new gameplay videos and new game announcements. Last month it was rumored that The Walking Dead and Fables game The Wolf Among Us developer Telltale Games might be working on a Game of Thrones project. Not only was this rumor confirmed with a teaser trailer, but a second teaser trailer was shown for another interesting Telltale project, based on the hit Borderlands series. You can check out both announcement teasers below.
Unlike The Walking Dead however, which follows a prequel/parallel storyline to avoid getting mixed up with the existing TV show/comic book story, Game of Thrones is said to actually be based on the HBO show and not so much the books. Whether this means new characters and a new story set in the same time frame of the show, or if they’ll still tell a prequel story using the now familiar faces of the characters from the show remains to be seen. You can see Telltale talking more about the project right here (as well as some of the aforementioned awkwardness VGX was apparently jam packed with).
