Today is a good day to resign in Klingon – if you’re North Carolina Councilman David Waddell, who submitted his letter of resignation in the fictional Star Trek language, stepping down from his position on the Indian Trail Town Council.
Waddell’s resignation was not only written in Klingon, but it also captured the true spirit of the warrior race, promising the Councilman’s eventual and victorious return.
Here’s the English translation of the letter:
Teach (the) city (the) constitution. I will return next time to witness victory. Resignation occurs in 2014 the 31st of January. Perhaps today is a good day (to) resign.
Here’s the original letter in Klingon with the English translation.
Regarding the unique resignation letter, which Waddell submitted to the Indian Trail mayor’s office on New Year’s Eve after serving for two years, Mayor Michael Alvarez told the NY Daily News that the letter is an “embarrassment.” Although the Mayor was not amused by Waddell’s tactic, Alvarez did give the exiting Councilman a salutation in kind:
“I wish him the best, live long and prosper. I don’t know what else to say,” Alvarez said.
I know nothing about the inner workings of North Carolina’s Indian Trail Town Council, but you have to give Waddell a lot of credit for planning an exit strategy that would have major news outlets – and now tons of geeks sites like this one – take notice. The local politician, who was formerly a plumber, said he resigned this way because “folks don’t know what to think of me half the time…. I might as well have one last laugh,” according to The Charlotte Observer.
According to the report in the Daily News, Alvarez said that the conservative Waddell, who was in the minority among the local government’s progressive liberals, would consistently vote “no” in meetings on all items, including the votes to adjourn meetings, and reportedly referred to the town’s proposal to build community parks as a “socialist” idea.
But, North Carolina hasn’t seen the last of Waddell yet, as he plans to still attend Indian Trail town meetings and also run for Kay Hagan’s U.S. Senate seat as a a write-in candidate of the Constitution Party.
It sounds like Waddell would make the perfect nemesis for Amy Poehler’s character Leslie Knope on the NBC sitcom Parks and Recreation.
