Johnny Depp Rumored To In Talks To Play As Doctor Strange

Marvel Studios has a knack for getting A-list actors to appear in their films. From Robert Redford and Ben Kingsley to last night’s Golden Globe winner for Best Actor, Michael Douglas. Legendary actors are beginning to catch on that Marvel Studios is the place to be if you want to be in a superhero movie – no offense to the other studios and their respective superhero properties, of course.

So after recently getting Douglas on board Edgar Wright‘s Ant-Man, Marvel isn’t waiting too long to get the ball rolling on casting Doctor Strange. Word is that they are looking at Pirates of the Caribbean star, Johnny Depp, to fill the role of Marvel’s mystic hero.

Now this is just a rumor, but our friends over at Latino Review report that Johnny Depp has met with Marvel to discuss taking on the role of Doctor Strange. However, the script would have to be rewritten to make the character more age appropriate, considering Depp is 50, and the titular character in the script is 30. And should Depp sign on for the role, I’d imagine that Disney would need to push the timetable up on the production of Pirates Of The Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales.

It comes as no surprise that Marvel is eyeing Depp. For starters, Depp and Disney have a very fruitful relationship thanks in part to the commercial success of the Pirates of the Caribbean films. He also scored bonus points with the studio by starring in Tim Burton’s quasi-sequel for Alice In Wonderland.

Marvel Studios’ president of production, Kevin Feige, has been quoted as saying that Doctor Strange is planned for ‘Phase 3’ of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, so while the film may not appear until 2016, the soonest we might get to see Strange on the big screen could be a post-credits scene in Avengers: Age Of Ultron, Guardians of the Galaxy, or possibly Ant-Man.

So what do you think? Is Depp a good fit for the role of Doctor Strange?

  1. Please……. No… He has a dah to much drama …. In every aspect of his personality. And what’s he going to do without Tim burton coloring his eyebrows?

  3. Works for me. Not sure about the whole needing a rewrite due to the character’s age, since Doctor Strange has always seemed like an older guy to me (I mean, how many years of medical school and practice does it take to become a neurosurgeon). Even if the character was 33 when the accident happened, he seems older, and since Depp seems younger than his 50 years, I don’t see how age is an issue, especially not in the same MCU where Iron Man is also pushing 50…

  4. Mr. Depp can play any role and makes it his own.
And by the looks of Dr. Strange’s character, it’s very similar to Depp’s looks. They won’t need heavy makeup to put on Depp.

  5. Or…. you can get someone to play him who isn’t an A lister, someone who has decent acting chops but not someone who will end up breaking the bank and screw up any chance of sequel/cross over movies.

The whole “lets see which super famous person we can get to play …. ” mentality kind of disgusts me. “He’s perfect” you say, because he has a similar look from one particular red carpet photo. However what do you imagine from Dr Strange? I don’t know about everyone else but I imagine someone with a deeper voice, someone who’s voice won’t instantly have me thinking of another character (Sorry Ed O’Neil you’re in that same boat Mr Bundy).

  6. I’m not sure… I really want Hugh Laurie to be him! I think that if the role required the humour, he could bring it, but also the seriousness! I’m not very familiar with Dr Strange so I don’t even know if humour would be required. And he can pretend to be American like in House! It’d be really awesome!

  7. I LOVE Dr. Strange and always have – he was one of the first comic characters I collected.
Although I like Johnny Depp as an actor, I kind of feel like he’s just playing himself in different clothing. Doesn’t matter if he’s serious or joking – it’s still him. I really hope they don’t pick him to do it – I mean at this point I would rather someone with maybe a less big name.
A lot of the movies coming out now adays I feel like I’m seeing the same faces over and over again. There’s no variety.
But I could be wrong and he may do a good job – have to wait and see.

  8. Johnny Depp would do an amazing job with this role. He’s great with “strange” roles (no pun intended) where his acting and creativity can be tested. Plus Disney loves Johnny Depp. Johnny Depp brings viewers automatically. He’d be an asset to them if he played this character.

  9. Depp may be 50, but he still looks 30 something.
