Netflix Streaming

March is here, and of course that means another handful of excellent movies and television shows have been added to Netflix’s instant watch options to help pass these last few weeks of winter. This month, several Academy Award-winning films have been added to Netflix streaming, including Capote and The Silence of the Lambs. 80s cinema also gets a very strong showing here with Dirty Dancing and Night of the Comet.

Of particular note this month is that the entire Star Wars: The Clone Wars animated saga has been added for streaming, and with it 13 new episodes that will debut exclusively on Netflix dubbed The Lost Missions. These episodes comprise what would have been Season 6 on television, prior to the show’s cancellation.

With Netflix’s streaming functionality being a bit difficult to navigate, it can be a challenge trying to locate all the newly added movies worth watching, so I’m cutting through the dreck and highlighting some great titles to add to your queue. Along with new releases from March, I’m adding a few leftovers culled from February 2014 not included in our original recommendations.

Go forth and add to your queue!

Top 11 Netflix Picks for February 2014

  • The Blair Witch Project (1999) – Revisit the shakey cam pseudo-documentary that helped launch a thousand found-footage horror movies. It still has its punch!
  • Capote (2005) – Of all Philip Seymour Hoffman performances, this Academy Award-winning role is one of the finest is his turn as Truman Capote during his time writing In Cold Blood.
  • Dirty Dancing (1987) – No one puts baby in the corner as Patrick Swayze sweeps Jennifer Grey off her feet on the dance floor. You’ll still have the time of your life with this one.
  • The Ice Storm (1997) – Ang Lee’s amazingly cast drama watches a family implode over Thanksgiving weekend in the 1970s during a treacherous winter storm.
  • Night of the Comet (1984) – Two sisters find themselves alone in Los Angeles after a comet vaporizes the human race”¦ except for those pesky mutants. (Read our review; available March 15)
  • A Nightmare on Elm Street 2: Freddy’s Revenge (1985) – In this overtly homoerotic horror sequel, Freddy Krueger attempts to re-enter the real world via the latest teen inhabitant of 1428 Elm St.
  • Robin Hood: Men in Tights (1993) – One of the last great Mel Brooks parodies features Cary Elwes as the titular character speaking in an English accent as he fights against the Sheriff of Rottingham.
  • The Silence of the Lambs (1991) – The Academy Award-sweeping horror movie that brought us immemorial performances including Anthony Hopkins, and a plethora of instantly classic quotes.
  • Star Wars: The Clone Wars (Full Series) – Set between Episodes II and III, the Jedi Knights fight against Count Dooku’s droid army while Anakin feels the draw of the Dark Side of the Force. (Available March 7th)
  • True Grit (1969) – John Wayne stars as Rooster Cogburn as he helps a young woman get revenge for the murder of her father.
  • Vanilla Sky (2001) – Cameron Crowe’s remake of Mexican film Abre Los Ojos features Tom Cruise dealing with the aftermath of a car accident in which his face is horribly disfigured.

February 2014 Streaming Releases Leftovers

Additionally, here are a few new additions to Netflix that were missed in my original February Best Of article:

  • Marvel’s Iron Man & Hulk: Heroes United (2013) – Iron Man and Hulk team up to fight against an energy-sucking villain named Zzzax who was created by a pair of HYDRA scientists.
  • Wishmaster (Series) – Get your 90s horror fix with this series in which a demonic entity attempts to regain its human form by granting wishes which turn perilous for those who succumb to the demon’s power.
  • The Returned (Season 1) – Several long-dead strangers find themselves unable to remember the details of their own demise as they return to their hometown and try to reconnect with their loved ones.

As always, I’ll be back next month with a whole new batch of selections and recommendations for you to check out!
