Best-selling author Anne Rice announced on Sunday that her next novel will see the return of the vampire Lestat de Lioncourt in Prince Lestat: The Vampire Chronicles, and will be a sequel to her first five vampire books through the fifth novel, 1995’s Memnoch the Devil and is a “true sequel” to 1988’s Queen Of The Damned.

The new book, which will be released on October 28, 2014 by Alfred A. Knopf, will be part The Vampire Chronicles, Rice’s book series which began with 1976’s Interview With The Vampire. The author broke the news on The Dinner Party with Christopher Rice and Eric Shaw Quinn, a podcast co-hosted by her son and fellow author Christopher Rice.

Below is an audio clip from the podcast along with video of when Rice revealed the news about Prince Lestat.

Rice revealed that she completed writing the new book in August 2013, but wasn’t able to announce the news until now. The upcoming novel, according to Rice, will be all about Lestat and the vampires and what they’re all doing now right now and how they’re coming to terms with what’s happened to them so far. It also tackles how Lestat is dealing with the demand for him to step forward to be some kind of leader of the vampire tribe. Rice also said that Prince Lestat feels like it’s the start of a new incarnation of The Vampire Chronicles.

Pre-orders for the upcoming book begin on March 16, 2014.

For the record, this FANTASTIC NEWS!!!! Rice’s Interview With The Vampire was the first post-Dracula book to take the literary world by storm when it came to these supernatural blood-sucking creatures. Long before Stephenie Meyers made vampires sparkle in her Twilight series, Rice gave us Lestat, Louis, Armand, and more – vampires who were seductive, yet deadly, and more importantly, serious. Rice’s Vampire Chronicles is an amazing multi-book tale, and her return to the world of Lestat will be a joyous occasion for fans. The author hasn’t lost her touch over the years, as her most recent series The Wolf Gift ChroniclesThe Wolf Gift & The Wolves of Midwinter — is reminiscent in style to her vampire series. I cannot wait for October to read the new story about Lestat!

  1. This makes me happy. Her latest few books didn’t appeal to me, but a return to visit Lestat and, hopefully, Louis, is very exciting to me.

  2. I guess her personal conviction about never writing about vampires lasted as long as her religious conversion — just long enough to make money from a new audience, before ditching them when she discovered that her older ones didn’t follow her.

Well, those werewolf books didn’t exactly put her back on top, so it’s not that surprising that she’d do an about-face.
