Netflix Streaming

April is here, but don’t let that fool you as there is another new batch of exciting and underrated titles for you to stream that Netflix has added to their instant watch options as spring slowly makes its way here. This month’s movies and television shows are sure to please once again and span the full spectrum of entertainment. From the legendary underdog story of Rocky to everyone’s favorite doctor House M.D. and the Reality TV predicting actioner The Running Man, there’s something for everyone.

With Netflix’s streaming functionality being a bit difficult to navigate, it can be a challenge trying to locate all the newly added movies worth watching, so I’m cutting through the dreck and highlighting some great titles to add to your queue. Along with new releases for April, I’m adding a few leftovers culled from March 2014 not included in our original recommendations.

Go forth and add to your queue!

Top 14 Netflix Picks for April 2014

  • Amores Perros (2000) – This Academy Award nominee for Best Foreign Language film ties three sets of lives together in Mexico City when they are spurred by a car accident.
  • Barton Fink (1991) – One of the Coen Brothers’ unsung classics brings John Tuturro’s playwright to Hollywood to write for the pictures and crosses paths with the always enthusiastic John Goodman.
  • Close Encounters of the Third Kind (1977) – Stephen Spielberg follows up Jaws with the story of a man who witnesses a UFO and is then inexplicably drawn to the wilderness and haunted by five repeating musical notes.
  • Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon (2000) – Relive Ang Lee’s wonderful and tragic story of Chinese legend which introduced much of America to the concept of “wire-fu.”
  • Death Wish 1 – 4 (1974-87) – The story of architect turned vigilante Paul Kersey (Charles Bronson) gets more ludicrous with each sequel and you’ll dig each one, along with the then-soon-to-be famous actors who inhabit bit parts throughout.
  • The Fifth Element (1997) – Luc Besson’s highly entertaining sci-fi actioner is a race against time to save the universe from utter destruction. Remember your Multipass!
  • Frankenstein’s Army (2013) – This low-budget body-horror film pits Frankenstein’s monstrous Nazi creations against a small detachment of Russians, with visceral and practical effects that must be seen!
  • House, M.D. (Season 1-8) – Hugh Laurie’s enigmatic and pill-addicted House along with his team of doctors solve one baffling and nigh-unbelievable illness after another.
  • Lars and the Real Girl (2007) – Get your Ryan Gosling / Barbie doll humping freak on with this odd tale of an awkward man who gets an entire town to buy into his delusion that his gal is real.
  • Mean Girls (2004) – Pre-downward spiral Lindsay Lohan comes at odds with her high school’s A-list clique when she falls for one of their ex-boyfriends in this Heathers-esque comedy.
  • The Muppets Take Manhattan (1984) – Bring back the halcyon days of your youth with the close of the original Muppets movie trilogy which brings the gang to New York where they try to sell their show.
  • No Holds Barred (1989) – Just in time for this year’s Wrestlemania comes Hulk Hogan at the height of Hulkamania doing battle with the mysterious Zeus on a new television network’s wrestling show.
  • Rocky 1 – 5 (1976 – 90) – Time to binge watch the classic trials and tribulations of Rocky Balboa as he goes up against Carl Weathers, Mr. T and Dolph Lundgren among others!
  • The Running Man (1987) – Arnold Schwarzenegger brings Stephen King’s dystopian future story to life in a world where reality TV is truly life and death, and may yet be a template for actual television programming (we hope!).

March 2014 Streaming Releases Leftovers

Additionally, here are a few new additions to Netflix that were missed in my original March Best Of article:

  • Bad Boys (1995) – Say what you will about what Michael Bay has become, his feature film debut is still a wild adventure that helped bring Will Smith into the world of action superstars.
  • Cartoons! Cartoons! Cartoons! – A huge assortment of shows have been added including Adventure Time Season 2, Batman: The Brave and the Bold Season 3, Green Lantern: The Animated Series Season 1 , Grim Adventures of Billy & Mandy Season 3 and Young Justice Season 1.
  • Gattaca (1997) – In a world where genetics dictate your life’s path before you are even born one man attempts to play a different hand than he was dealt.
  • The Grandmaster (2013) – In this version of the life story of Ip Man, the man who trained Bruce Lee, physics takes back seat as director Wong Kar Wai puts his own flourish on the legend.
  • Mega Shark vs. Mecha Shark (2014)Read the review, watch the movie. You won’t regret it.

As always, I’ll be back next month with a whole new batch of selections and recommendations for you to check out!
