In January, Johnny Depp was rumored to play Dr. Strange for Marvel Studios. The rumor didn’t pan out as some would have hoped, but it may have sparked an interest in the actor playing another magical hero of sorts.
The actor is in talks to play Harry Houdini in Lionsgate/Summit’s The Secret Life of Houdini: The Making of America’s First Superhero. As you may have guessed, the film will portray one of the world’s most famous magicians as a superhero. Hit the jump to learn more about this version of Harry Houdini.
The Hollywood Reporter says that the Houdini you will see in the film is “not just a master escape artist but an investigator of the world of the occult.”
Written by Noah Oppenheim, the film is based on William Kalush and Larry Sloman‘s book of the same name. Dean Parisot (Red 2) will direct.
Depp is coming off of two major box office disappointments: The Lone Ranger and Transcendence. But with the list of projects on the actor’s schedule, he may turn the corner.
It may be a while before we can see this film hit the big screen considering he is currently working on the Whitey Bulger biopic Black Mass; then he moves on to Alice In Wonderland 2; then Lionsgate wants to start production on Houdini in November 2014, which would mean that Pirates of the Caribbean 5 or The Night Stalker would be pushed back until at least 2015 the earliest.
