James Gunn Returning For ‘Guardians Of The Galaxy 2’

BAADASSSSS!   |

Guardians Of The Galaxy Poster Header

Guardians of the Galaxy, the latest feature from Marvel Studios, currently has a 100% rating on Rotten Tomatoes based off of 25 reviews. Do you know how difficult it is to get that perfect of a rating? Only the truest classics and greatest films of all time are able to reach that magic number. Plus there are many films beloved by all that barely crack the 90s. The rating might drop a bit as the film gets closer to its theatrical release next week, but right now Guardians stands a mighty chance at being one of the best-reviewed motion pictures of 2014 and one of the most successful August releases in history. And seeing as how this is a Marvel movie, naturally Guardians of the Galaxy 2 is being discussed.

Though a sequel has not been officially announced yet (Marvel could still make the announcement at their Saturday Comic-Con panel), they’re confident enough that the first will do well enough to warrant a second entry, and they want Gunn to return for it. Continue reading for more.

The news first surfaced on The Wrap, who chatted with Guardians co-writer Nicole Perlman. According to Perlman:

“James will be directing “˜Guardians 2,’ so he would also be writing “˜Guardians 2.'”

Guardians of the Galaxy has been repeatedly referred to as Marvel’s riskiest film project to date, thus making it perfectly understandable for the studio to wait and see how the first movie performs before hastily putting a sequel into their development pipeline. Now that the movie has been garnering enthusiastic word of mouth and overwhelmingly positive reviews from early screenings their confidence in future cinematic adventures of the Guardians has been raised.

Perlman added:

“They started to figure it out pretty quick when they started getting the reactions from the audience; it was a very positive reaction. Of course they would want to make a sequel as long as it does well and people are excited about it, they’ll wanna do a sequel. So, it’s going to happen.”

Perlman couldn’t confirm that she would be invited back to co-write the Guardians sequel but did state that she would love to work with Marvel Studios again. Guardians of the Galaxy is her first produced film credit.

After that, Variety reported that Marvel was indeed planning for a sequel with Gunn, again, assuming it does as well as they expect it to.

Gunn himself spoke on the topic recently to The Adam Corrola Show (via Screen Rant), talking about how it’s a bit of a tricky situation:

“I’m actually in a somewhat weird position because if the movie does well, the I’m gonna make the sequel. And if it does okay then, well, I’ve already been offered other movies but I can only do those other movies if I don’t do the sequel, so it’s a weird situation.”

Guardians of the Galaxy, as if you weren’t already aware, stars Chris Pratt, Zoe Saldana, Dave Bautista, Lee Pace, Karen Gillan, Benicio Del Toro, Djimon Hounsou, John C. Reilly, Glenn Close, Michael Rooker, and the voice talents of Bradley Cooper, Vin Diesel, and Josh Brolin, and opens in theaters on August 1, 2014.
