Chicago psychedelic black metal legends Nachtmystium broke up in 2013 after a 13-year career filled with controversy, numerous line-up changes, and some of the greatest black metal that America has ever produced.

Watch Nachtmystium perform live in the video below.

Blake Judd and Pat McCormick formed Nachtmystium in 2000 and started out producing fairly standard formula black metal based on the works of second-wave Scandinavian black metal bands such as Darkthrone and Mayhem. This lasted through their first two studio albums before the band began to experiment with incorporating some of classic rock’s psychedelic elements into their sound. The next three Nachtmystium releases would follow this path until the band came full circle, returning to a more straight ahead black metal assault for their sixth album Silencing Machine.

Controversy has plagued Nachtmystium since they were kicked off of a Scion AV show in Atlanta amidst (false) allegations that they were Nazi sympathizers. It turns out that the only Nazi connection to the band came in the form of unauthorized bootlegs of the band’s second demo and first studio album being pressed without their knowledge by labels with ties to the National Socialist movement. Upon learning of this, Blake Judd demanded that the labels stop selling the bootlegs and issued a statement vehemently denying any affiliation or support of the movement.

Shortly after all of this occurred in 2009, Judd injured his leg and was prescribed Oxycodone for the pain. The singer and guitarist would develop a violent dependency on the drug that would derail his life and band.

On November 13, 2013, shortly after being arrested on charges of misdemeanor theft by unauthorized control of property, Judd issued a statement that he would be disbanding Nachtmystium after completion of the band’s seventh studio album The World We Left Behind. The singer/guitarist thanked the fans for their years of support and said that he needed to work on overcoming his opiate addiction.

The World We Left Behind will be issued on August 5th in North America and August 4th in Europe/Australia/New Zealand via Century Media Records.
