Right now, Doctor Who stars Peter Capaldi and Jenna Coleman and showrunner Steven Moffat are on a whirlwind publicity tour of seven cities in five continents and fans are showing up in droves to see them. The world awaits the Season 8 premiere on August 23, where we’ll finally get to see Capaldi featured in his first full episode as the new Doctor, with Coleman as his companion.
But with the premiere just a week away, the UK Mirror is reporting that Coleman “is believed to be quitting” Doctor Who and will make her exit from the long-running science fiction television series this Christmas.
Considering its source, you have to take this news as rumor, but it’s not entirely impossible, considering there’s a new Doctor in place and Doctor Who is a show that frequently changes the cast.
From the Mirror’s unnamed source:
Yesterday a source said: “The conversations about Jenna’s exit have started, and a plan is in place which is being ironed out.
“By the time she leaves she will be one of the longest-standing companions ever. She has been absolutely brilliant in the role, but everyone agrees it is a part that should change after a period.”
Their source also add this about Coleman’s exit: “It was very much a mutual decision.”
Coleman came on to the popular British series in 2012 as Clara Oswald, first as companion to Matt Smith’s Doctor in Season 7. The 28-year-old actress was chosen for the role because of her on-screen chemistry with Smith and her ability to talk faster than the quick-talking Doctor. While Cara and Smith’s Doctor had an obvious flirtation going on, there’s now a new, older Doctor coming creating an all-together new dynamic, one which will reportedly have no flirting, according to the 56-year-old Capaldi.
The Mirror said that “The BBC refused to comment on Jenna-Louise’s exit,” which could mean that the network didn’t want to dignify the rumor with a response, or possibly that this is true and they’re not ready to reveal it, especially with the aforementioned massive publicity tour featuring Coleman currently underway.
