Beheading of a King is a young technical death metal band from Montreal, Quebec that have already overcome the sort of tragedy that would splinter many bands. Just before the band was to release its second EP Quasar: Preserving Legacy in early 2011, singer Mathieu Paquette committed suicide at the age of 20.
The band never had any doubt that their fallen comrade would want them to continue, stating as much on their Facebook page shortly after his funeral. After a period of mourning the band recruited one singer, who didn’t quite work out, before settling on new frontman Fred Beaulieu. They released a comeback single entitled “Handcrafted” in 2013.
The official video for “Handcrafted,” which was also the first in the band’s history can be seen here below.
On September 30, 2014 Beheading of a King unveiled their third release Deathrone. The album is a technical death metal tour-de-force. Despite being without a label, the band has forged on, creating quality material and releasing it independently. Deathrone sounds just as high quality as any major label release and the songwriting matches. This is a fantastic release from an excellent and skilled young band. Highlights include “Leviathan,” “Crown Fragments,” “Enthrone,” and “My Final Hour.”
Technical death metal is not everyone’s cup of tea. But if you are a fan of the genre, be sure not to miss Beheading of a King. I, for one, am very pleased that the band is still around and making some of the most brutal metal out there today.
Beheading of a King are planning to tour in 2015. When the dates are announced, we at GoD will be sure to pass them along.
