Now that that’s out of the way…

The basic timeline has been written and spoken about a multitude of times: Rosanne–>Parenthood–>Buffy the Vampire Slayer movie–>Toy-Story–>Alien: Resurrection–>Buffy/Angel/Firefly–>Serenity–>Dr. Horrible–>Dollhouse–>Cabin in the Woods–>Avengers–>Much Ado About Nothing–>Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. and Avengers: Age of Ultron coming up (forgive me if I left one or two out), but rare is the chance to find out from the perspective of Joss Whedon himself…the stuff that didn’t make it, changes and compromises he had to make, changes he refused to make, the insecurities, the disappointments, the thrills, and the joy. This biography from fan Amy Pascale goes so in-depth, Joss could have written it himself (it probably would have been a little more self-deprecating though). I’m a fast reader. I change books like I change clothes. But this book? I took my time. I savored every word and every moment, like a last meal. I read it the way I read a favorite book for the fourth time or watch a favorite movie for the seventh, knowing already what has happened, but now enjoying the subtleties, or the ability to be surprised at something familiar.

To give a synopsis would not do this powerful glimpse justice. Pascale not only fills in the depth and struggle behind each of his accomplishments, she interweaves his personality and process behind each action (or inaction). Joss feels very deeply connected to his actors, which may not be a surprise, since they soon become his family, and appear often in other projects of his. With a forward by Nathan Fillion and dozens of anecdotes from Samuel L. Jackson, Neil Patrick Harris, Sarah Michelle Gellar, Mark Ruffalo, Amy Acker, and many more, you get to know this humble writer, director, producer, composer, actor, and feminist in a way never known before.

Here are a few bits of the many rich memories you will be gifted with from this book:

– Joss suggested that it be Barbie who saves Woody and Buzz from Sid in Toy Story, but Mattel didn’t want action-hero Barbie.

– In the fall of 2002, Joss had three series on three different networks: Buffy on UPN, Angel on the WB, and Firefly on FOX.

– Joss’s biggest influence on the character of Buffy was X-Men mutant Kitty Pryde, who “can phase through solid matter and often serves as the moral center of the X-Men.” He was excited when Chris Claremont agreed to end her storyline in X-treme X-Men so Joss could write for her in the Astonishing X-Men comics.

– There are 30+ books of essays dedicated to Whedon’s TV work.

– Joss is a fanboy of Veronica Mars.

– Joss wrote two scripts for a Wonder Woman movie, but they were rejected.

There’s so much more in this riveting narrative. Go grab your copy!
