James Cameron Says ‘Avatar’ Sequels Will Make You “S*** Yourself”

James Cameron Directing Avatar

Most of the time when we are told that a movie will blow us away by its director, it tends to be a bit of an overblown reaction. Maybe their expectations are too high or it’s just another marketing strategy to get people to watch the film. But for James Cameron there is a specific reason for him to get audiences amped up. Especially for a film like Avatar. Now, Avatar isn’t universally loved by all, but a lot of people can agree that the visuals set the standard for high quality visual effects and has done so much for motion capture technology.

Cameron is currently working on three Avatar sequels, but production for those films have yet to start. While we wait for cameras to roll, the director is speaking out about what we will see, and according to him, we will “shit” ourselves. He also addressed the frame rate for the film. Hit the jump for more.

The three sequels are still early in the pre-production phase, but here is what Cameron told Empire Magazine on what we can expect to see,

“I can tell you one thing about them. They’re gonna be bitchin’. You will shit yourself with your mouth wide open.”

That’s not really surprising to hear. It does set the bar pretty high. But it seems a little disingenuous. It has been five long years since the release of the first Avatar film, and with no other information to go on, journalists have been doing nothing but asking him about these sequels.

Higher frame rates have been the topics of discussion for a couple of films, especially since Peter Jackson has released The Hobbit trilogy in 48fps. Cameron talked about how audiences may not be able to see the film at 60fps like he had hoped.

“My thinking at the time was that 60 [FPS] might be a better segue to the video market. I’ll be plugging into a system that’s a little more mature, so it makes sense for me to do 48 frames at this point.”

60fps for home entertainment sounds very intriguing. How that will work transitioning from the various formats will be interesting to see.

The three Avatar sequels are scheduled for December 2016, 2017, and 2018 releases. Filming is expected to begin in December 2014, and all three sequels will go into production simultaneously.
