Back in May, it was announced that Roberto Orci would be directingStar Trek 3 and the Transformers writer even dropped off as executive producer for the Power Rangers movie to focus on the Trek sequel.
Now, Deadline is reporting that Orci, who was to pick up where franchise director J.J. Abrams left off (when he moved on to Star Wars: The Force Awakens), will no longer be directing the third Star Trek movie, but he will stay on as producer.
On top of that, Deadline reports their sources tell them that Shaun Of The Dead director Edgar Wright and a few others are on the short list to take over at the helm. Wright was originally attached to Marvel’s Ant-Man before parting ways with the studio back in May because of creative differences.
Orci co-wrote the first two Star Trek movies of the rebooted franchise with Alex Kurtzman.
We all know Edgar Wright is a great director who would have made an excellent Ant-Man movie, but how would he do in the scifi universe of Star Trek/em>? Likely, he’d be awesome there, too. We’ll have to wait and see who takes over for Orci.
