Star Wars title

Walt Disney Studios, Lucasfilm Ltd., and 20th Century Fox announced today that they will soon be releasing all six movies in George Lucas‘ groundbreaking space fantasy saga Star Wars on Digital HD for the first time as The Star Wars Digital Movie Collection. Each film, from The Phantom Menace to Return of the Jedi, will come packaged with fan-pleasing bonus content, including interviews, documentaries, and deleted scenes.

You can check out a promotional video and a full breakdown of extra content here below.

The The Star Wars Digital Movie Collection will allow longtime fans of the franchise and recent converts alike to watch the complete Star Wars cinematic saga in shimmering high-definition on their computers or any electronic device that supports the technology. In addition, Disney and Lucasfilm are doubtlessly depending on this release to help promote the December release of Star Wars: The Force Awakens, and it should do quite nicely.

Unfortunately for you hardcore fans, the versions of the original trilogy being released in this collection look to be the Special Editions. Were you actually expecting anything different this time?

Alan Bergman, president of the Walt Disney Studios, expressed his support for this upcoming release in an official statement:

“Since the debut of the first film nearly 40 years ago, Star Wars has become a worldwide phenomenon with legions of fans from every generation. It’s only fitting that audiences enjoy this legendary saga and its many fascinating behind-the-scenes stories on a wide variety of platforms, and we’re very excited to finally bring all six films to Digital HD for the first time.”

Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy had this to say regarding the news:

“We’re thrilled that fans will be able to enjoy the Star Wars saga on their digital devices wherever they go. These films broke new ground in technology, design, sound, and visual effects, and we’ve created some very special bonus material which delves into the saga’s rich history, including new and never-before-released conversations between legendary Star Wars artists “” the masters who helped George bring his iconic universe to life.”
