First Look: Jared Leto As The Joker In ‘Suicide Squad’

Today is the 75th anniversary of the Joker’s first appearance in the DC Comics universe (in Batman #1). To mark the occasion, Suicide Squad director David Ayer has revealed the first full, official look at Jared Leto as the Joker in his upcoming Warner Bros. film.

Check out the image here below.

Earlier this month, Ayer had released the first cast photo from Suicide Squad, with the actors together for a table read, though Leto was notably absent for the gathering. Soon after, the director posted a photo of Leto striking a pose in homage to the Joker cover for the classic DC Comics The Killing Joke, written by Alan Moore. But the actor was not in full-on Joker mode at that point and his face was obscured by the camera he was holding.

Over the past few weeks, Leto has been seen at events slowly transforming his look from long-haired, bearded brunette (with highlights) to cropped bleached blond (with bleached eyebrows as well). This new image released gives us the full look at his bombastic Joker, which is quite different from the way we’re used to seeing the character. While the Joker is a menacing, terrifying figure, it was typically his behavior that made him appear so frightening. In Christopher Nolan’s The Dark Knight Trilogy, Health Ledger’s villainous Joker had a scarred face, which he covered in face paint, being made more to look like a clown, and he donned the classic purple Joker attire. Leto, on the other hand, has disturbing body tattoos with the word “Damaged” inked on his forehead, as well as rotting teeth and short green hair, looking like he would fit right in to a 1990s Marilyn Manson video. Knowing how the Academy Award-winning actor goes all-out for his roles, Leto is sure to give us one terrifying performance in Suicide Squad.

Suicide Squad stars Jared Leto, Will Smith, Margot Robbie, Jai Courtney, Cara Delevingne, Joel Kinnaman, Viola Davis, Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje, Scott Eastwood, Ike Barinholtz, Adam Beach, and Jim Parrack, and is scheduled to hit theaters on August 5, 2016.

  2. Well now that I dont really like the look, it all hinges on the performance.

  3. The performance doesn’t even matter if it looks like a totally different character. Tattoos on the Joker? NOPE. Already out of character.

  4. I love it and it captures the essence of being the Joker perfectly. People are way too rigid about change. It’s why art is inhibited as a stifled. The primary reason Hollywood keeps regurgitating the same movies over and over and over, because people like what they like and are closed minded.
