Garry Marshall Gives Us ‘Mother’s Day,’ The Ensemble Holiday Movie You Didn’t Ask For

Garry Marshall and Julia Roberts

Valentine’s Day and New Year’s Eve director Garry Marshall isn’t quite done with directing romantic comedies that feature an ensemble cast tangled in an intertwining story that take place during the course of a celebrated holiday.

After nearly a three-year hiatus, the director has chosen Mother’s Day as his next holiday movie, and he has already got Julia Roberts, Kate Hudson, Jennifer Aniston, and Jason Sudeikis set to star in the film. More on the story below.

Deadline was the first to report on the film.

According to the site, Anya Kochoff-Romano and Lily Hollander penned the script, which will tell “intertwining stories about the lives of several mothers as the title holiday approaches.” Big surprise there.

This wouldn’t be Roberts’ first time working with Marshall. She started working with the director as far back as Pretty Woman, which was then followed by Runaway Bride. The actress also appeared in Marshall’s first ensemble holiday film, Valentine’s Day, but did not appear in the follow-up New Year’s Eve.

Hudson played the title role in Marshall’s Raising Helen, but hasn’t appeared in any of his previous holiday romantic comedies.

And though Sudeikis and Aniston have appeared together in We’re The Millers and both Horrible Bosses films, this would be the first time that either of them have worked with Marshall.

Both Valentine’s Day and New Year’s Eve were widely panned by critics, with the latter receiving a single digit score on Rotten Tomatoes. But moviegoers didn’t seem to care as Valentine’s Day grossed $216 million worldwide, while New Year’s Eve grossed $142 million. Huge numbers considering the former was released during one of the weakest grossing months of the year, while the latter was released after the Thanksgiving holiday.

Both of Marshall’s previous holiday-themed films were released by New Line, but Mother’s Day will be looking for potential buyers to distribute the film. Production is slated to begin in August. Don’t even bother asking when the film is going to be released.
