So You Think You Can Dance (SYTYCD): Top 6 + Elimination

SYTYCD 1214-04

So You Think You Can Dance is almost done for the season, and I will be so sad to see it go. Luckily, I already have my tickets for the Season 12 tour, which takes the Top 10 (plus numbers 11 and 12 as alternates), and performs the best routines of the season. There’s only two episodes left – a performance finale and a results finale, which always promises a good time. It’s often the best episode of the season as finales should be. The winner’s prize is a spot in Jlo’s Las Vegas show. I’m sure judges Nigel Lythgoe, Jason Derulo, and Paula Abdul, as well as host Cat Deeley, are just as anxious as I am to see who is crowned “America’s Favorite Dancer.”

So let’s go!

Choreographer(s): Ray Leeper
Dancers: Gaby & All-Star Marko (Season 8)
Style: Jazz
Song: “Emergency” by Icona Pop

I loved this dance. It was saucy and flirty, and not as “booty” as they led us to believe it was. She and Marko were completely in sync. It was fast and it was utterly enjoyable. Gaby kept up. How does a tapper do a cartwheel with no hands?

Choreographer(s): Tessandra Chavez
Dancers: Jaja & All-Star Alex (Season 7)
Style: Contemporary
Song: “Youth” by Daughter

This performance was so incredibly fantastic. It could have been on Broadway – that raw emotion. Jaja was a patient with Alzheimer’s. She made me believe her with dance! Chills and tears – she went through the recognition and loss of memory in cycles, and we went with her. And Alex, with his technique, just enhanced her performance. This is a future favorite.

Choreographer(s): Chris Scott
Dancers: Megz & All-Star Joshua (Season 4)
Style: Hip-Hop
Song: “Freedom” by Pharrell Williams

I love Megz, but this did not stand out as much as the previous 2 performances. I found myself looking at Joshua more than Megz. This is her style, and she did not “wow” me. That being said, she did a good job. I hope it’s enough.

Choreographer(s): Dmitry Chaplin
Dancers: Jim & All-Star Anya (Season 3)
Style: Samba
Song: “Chillando Goma” by Fulanito

This was THE BEST DANCE OF THE ENTIRE SEASON! So sexy, so quick, so fun. Nigel may have had criticism about the shoulders, but the untrained eye in me couldn’t see it. Anya is always perfection. And Jim was there for her, and looked like he was really into her. I’ve missed ballroom this season. They really have not had many ballroom routines.

Choreographer(s): Justin Giles
Dancers: Virgil & All-Star Melanie (Season 8)
Style: Contemporary
Song: “All Is Now Harmed” by Ben Howard

Very intense and emotional, this dance was very good. It’s not the most exciting I’ve seen from Virgil, but still a great routine. It might be that I’m just used to seeing Virgil full of joy in dance. It was nice to see the range of emotions that he is capable of.

Choreographer(s): Nick Florez & RJ Durell
Dancers: Hailee & All-Star Robert (Season 7)
Style: Jazz
Song: “Haunted” by Beyonce

I always like Jazz numbers. This was a dark, sexy routine, with a lot of energy. I would be nervous kissing Robert too. He is way too handsome. But she looked cool doing it and in control.

Choreographer(s): Josh Bergasse
Dancers: Jim & Gabby
Style: Broadway
Song: “Fever” by Michael Buble

Jim and Gaby did look like All-Stars. They had great technique. Nigel may not have liked this one that much, but I think he’s being too hard on them. They were adorable, and the dream sequence choreography was quite clever.

Choreographer(s): Stacey Tookey
Dancers: Hailee & Megz
Style: Contemporary
Song: “Sarajevo” by Max Richter & Sara Leonard

Well done. Watch this and tell me this was not a routine of strength and intensity. Megz was really great in this, and it is not in her wheelhouse. Both her and Hailee were so beautiful.

Choreographer(s): Pharside & Phoenix
Dancers: Virgil & Jaja
Style: Hip Hop
Song: “If You Crump Stand Up” by EdiT

This fairy tale routine was a fairy tale. Virgil and Jaja were in their element, both their elements in fact. Their hip hop technique is always perfect, and they performed it even better than that. Loved it.
