The Flash is set to make its sophomore season debut later this week, but WB is gathering all the final pieces for the big screen iteration of the Scarlet Speedster before it heads into production. They’ve already nabbed The LEGO Movie directors Chris Miller and Phil Lord to write a treatment, and were considered to direct the film before the accepted the offer to direct the Young Han Solo film. But the studio is moving past that, and have settled on Seth Grahame-Smith, who is best known for writing Pride and Prejudice and Zombies and Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter. More on this story below.
While Grahame-Smith’s novels have been turned into feature films, and the author has dipped into the world of screenwriting, THR says The Flash would be his feature directorial debut. He has previously directed two episodes of MTV comedy The Hard Times of R.J. Berger. It’s not entirely uncommon for studios to hire indie directors to helm big budget films. In fact, it is actually a common practice within the industry.
Ezra Miller is confirmed to play Barry Allen, a forensic scientist known for being slow and very late who is endowed with incredible speed when a lighting bolt shatters a case full of chemicals and spills over him. The character is expected to make his big screen debut in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice before teaming up with his fellow heroes in Justice League Part I. Following Justice League, he will then appear in his own solo adventure.
Grahame-Smith is best known for writing the genre-mashup novels Pride and Prejudice and Zombies and Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter, but he is also making a name for himself as a screenwriter. He is currently writing The LEGO Batman movie. So it looks like WB was so impressed with his work, that they are going to give him the chance to write and direct The Flash.
So far Miller is the only actor confirmed to be in the cast. But the solo film is still three years away from release, so there is plenty of time before any other casting announcements are made.
The Flash is due out for release on March 3, 2018. Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice is scheduled to open March 25, 2016. Justice League Part I will hit theaters in the summer of 2017, with Justice League Part II debuting summer of 2019.
