Superhero season is officially back! Yesterday kicked off with The Flash, and tonight it’s time for its darker cousin, Arrow.

When we last saw Oliver Queen aka Arrow (Stephen Amell), he was happily driving down a sunny road, away from the chaos and towards his new happy life with Felicity (Emily Bett Rickards). Matt Nable‘s Ra’s al Ghul was defeated, and Malcolm Merlyn (John Barrowman) took his place. Thea (Willa Holland) embraced her inner superhero in her red leather outfit, after her boyfriend Roy Harper (Colton Haynes) left town. It looks like Ray Palmer (Brandon Routh) exploded (but we know better), and Diggle (David Ramsey) and Laurel (Katie Cassidy) are still in town fighting crime, most likely against her anti-vigilante father Lance’s wishes (Paul Blackthorne).

We all caught up? Don’t read on unless you’ve watched the episode, for spoilers lie ahead.

Arrow 4.1 “Green Arrow” review: Arrow came back exactly as I knew it would – with an hourlong episode (including commercials) feeling like 5 minutes, screaming “No!!!” at the screen at various points, and also that it ended at all, and the new big bad feeling worse than any villain they have had before (it’s his cool mystical confidence, that’s why). So here goes…

Felicity Smoak – you have failed this omelet.” Sigh…

Diggle, Laurel, and Thea are a new team against the “ghosts.” The ghosts are headed by Damian Darhk (Neal McDonough) who brazenly walked into a city meeting to lay out his plan, then orchestrated an attack that killed 3 of 4 city leaders (the 4th being Lance). You remember Ra’s al Ghul’s opinion of Darkh? Ra’s thought he was bad? He must be really really bad.

They really need help, so Thea and Laurel interrupt an almost proposal (unbeknownst to Felicity), against Diggle’s wishes. That’s ok. Felicity was bored with suburbia anyway. But your man is hot, Felicity!

They go back and jump right in: to Diggle’s dismay, to Lance’s consternation, but the rest are glad. Diggle and Lance will come around (okay – maybe never Lance).

Something is wrong with Thea. Hello? Remember The Lazarus Pit and its dire consequences?

As always with “big bads,” the battles may be won, but the war will last all season.

There are still flashbacks. These have Amanda Waller (Cynthia Addai-Robinson), yet are not quite up to the point of Episode 1.1. It has only been 4 years and the flashbacks say 5 years ago. I’m totally excited to see season 1 flashbacks. That starts season 5, no?

Two big shocks this episode:

1- Lance in cahoots with Darhk? What is he holding over his head? Does it have to do with Sarah (Caity Lotz)?

2- I got so excited when I saw the “guest” Grant Gustin in the beginning credits, but the Flash’s 6-months-later graveside chat with Oliver was startling. Who is in that grave?

The Zoom reference was very cool and flashforward-y.

And I did miss Merlyn this episode.

Arrow airs Wednesday nights at 8pm ET on The CW.

The CW’s synopsis:

Arrow
Green Arrow (Ep# 401)
MY NAME IS THE GREEN ARROW — Oliver (Stephen Amell) and Felicity’s (Emily Bett Rickards) blissful getaway is cut short when Thea (Willa Holland) and Laurel (Katie Cassidy) pay them a visit and tell Oliver they need his help back in Star City. The city has been attacked by “Ghosts,” assassins led by a dangerous man named Damien Darhk (guest star Neal McDonough). However, when Oliver returns, Diggle (David Ramsey) makes it very clear that he doesn’t want Oliver on the team. Thor Freudenthal directed the episode with story by Greg Berlanti & Beth Schwartz and teleplay by Marc Guggenheim & Wendy Mericle (#401). Original airdate 10/7/2015.
