Great Scott! Could it be? Is it really October 21, 2015? Why, yes. Yes, it is! And to commemorate Back To The Future Day, IDW Publishing has released Back To The Future #1! Based on one of the greatest film trilogies of the twentieth century, this comic book brings us two stories that delve into the days prior to the first film. Everything you ever wanted to know is right here in this comic!*

Like I said, this issue, the first of four in this miniseries, consists of two unique stories. One explores the first meeting of Marty McFly and Doctor Emmett Brown. In the second tale, we see how Emmett becomes part of one of the most significant scientific programs of the twentieth century.

Permeating all three films is Marty’s love of music; he has a passion for the guitar and rock music. In Bob Gale and John Barber‘s When Marty Met Emmett we see how a simple quest for equipment turns into an adventure of mildly epic proportions. In the end, all the challenges Marty faces are well worth the effort because, as we all know, Marty is never, ever “chicken.” But my favorite part about this story is the perspective from which it’s told. You’ll get a kick out of it for sure.

Next up, we have Dan Schoening‘s Looking For A Few Good Scientists. This little tale revolves strictly around a much younger Doc Brown, who at this point is an instructor at Caltech. The year is 1943 and our good professor is irate about his exclusion from something of which he knows nothing. A bit of subterfuge, not a little lying and a few plot twists later lead us to the surprising climax of the first part of what might just be the best story yet. Except for the Jell-O, that particular concoction looked horrific.

And, as with most things in this franchise, it’s all about the timing. This comic book, these movies, this day — October 21, 2015, the day that Marty time-travels to in the second movie. Two great stories that give some depth to one of my favorite film franchises of all time. There’s no way you won’t enjoy this comic. It starts off a couple of wonderful storylines from a guy who helped create the originals (Gale). If for some strange reason you haven’t seen the movies, all I can say is: “What’s wrong with you?!” Pick up this comic before it sells out (and it will) and go watch Michael J. Fox and Christopher Lloyd work their magic together on screen in the trilogy.

This review was written whilst listening to Huey Lewis and the News! Don’t judge me, that’s the “Power Of Love.”

*Not really. But it answers a few questions about the movies you might have posed at some point in your life. Really…did you expect a comic book to hold the answer to all of life’s questions? I mean, it’s a great comic, but seriously, you’ve set the bar a little high there, folks.
